[ # ] Setanta Hurling Team of the Year for 2008
September 9th, 2008

The Setanta Sports website team have picked . There’s a few changes from the Sunday Game team.

Donal Og Cusack in goals ? I find that a bit odd, especially given he was sent off before half time against Galway.
Backs and Midfield are the same. They mention that they were close to giving the corner back to Shane O’Neill to Cork instead of Jackie Tyrell, which would have been fair enough, he did have a great year.
They have Seamus Callinan at centre forward as opposed to Ben O’Connor for the Sunday Game and they have John Mullane at corner forward as opposed to Eoin Kelly. I totally agree with the last one - if there’s only room for one of Mullane or Kelly then it has to be Mullane for his never give up attitude and his respectable performance in the All Ireland.

Their team is

Donal Og Cusack
Michael Kavanagh, Noel Hickey, Jackie Tyrell
Tommy Walsh, Conor O’Mahoney, JJ Delaney
James Fitzpatrick, Shane McGrath
Henry Shefflin, Seamus Callinan, Eoin Larkin
Eddie Brennan, Joe Canning, John Mullane

Sorry but didnt Eoin kelly (waterford) finish as the top scorer, surely deserves a spot, no? would have said clinton Henessy for keeper as well,as he made great saves en route to final. Mullane maybe deserves but not at kellys expense, he has been without a doubt our player of the year.

Yeah it’s a tough one. After the semi Kelly seemed to be in the running for player of the year but he had an awful final. Mullane stood up to be counted on the bad days, the first day against Clare and in the final and he set up a lot of Kellys scores.
But that’s what happens when you pick star teams - everyone has their own view

how can callinan be put in there ahead of kelly or even lyng, he had one good game. also surely pj ryan must be considered for goalie as he didn’t concede a single goal in the championship

The problem with Ryan as with McGarry before him is that he plays behind such a good full back line he doesn’t have that much to do or doesn’t get credit for what he does.

But certainly when you go through a campaign without conceding a goal you deserve recognition. I don’t think any keeper stood out this year so Ryan should have a good a shout as any
