‘Bags under your eyes’ is the common way to say your under-eye area is mildly swollen or puffy. This is very common as you age and the tissues around your eyes supporting the lids start to weaken, but it can also be caused by fluid retention (as you wake up or after a salty meal), lack of sleep, allergies, and smoking. Sometimes, black bags under your eyes just run in your family. Express.co.uk reveals how to get rid of black bags under your eyes and chatted to celebrity makeup artist Bryony Blake to find out how to hide black bags in the meantime.
Get more sleep
According to the Mayo Clinic, bags under the eyes are normally fixed or reduced by home and lifestyle changes or treatments.
If you regularly don’t get enough sleep, you’re bound to have puffy eyes and dark circles – this is your body’s way of telling you to get more rest.
The first and most important step when it comes to eliminating dark circles is addressing your sleeping pattern, how much sleep you get, and whether or not that amount of sleep is enough for your body.
Once you are getting enough sleep, your eyes will naturally become less puffy and the dark circles will fade.
Another top tip is to sleep with your head slightly raised using an extra pillow, as this will prevent fluid from accumulating around your eyes as you sleep and reduce dark circles.
Skincare changes and at-home hacks might also help to reduce the bags under your eyes.
For example, you can try to rehydrate the area with eye masks and eye creams.
As you apply the products, use gentle tapping motions with your index and middle fingers to encourage blood flow to the area – circling the eyes outwards, going along the eyebrows and then inward along the cheekbones towards your nose.
You could also use a cold jade roller or gua sha to massage the area and take down some of the swelling.
Some people swear by soaking the area in damp tea bags, as the tannins in them are anti-inflammatory and help to get rid of swelling, discolouration, puffiness, dark circles and bags under the eyes.
A top makeup artist secret for improving the appearance of dark circles is eyedrops.
Eye drops typically reduce dry eyes and some allergy problems that cause you to itch your eyes and make dark circles worse.
Red, bloodshot eyes are another telltale sign of a sleepless night, accompanying dark eye bags.
Eye drops can soothe the redness and make your eyes appear more well-rested and awake, which in turn makes your dark circles not as extreme.
Bryony said: “If you’re like me, the past year of pretty much solid screen time has taken its toll on my eyes and I am finding they are very dry.
“Before I apply any makeup, I make sure I pop a couple of drops of the Systane® COMPLETE in each eye to refresh and revive them. They provide fast hydration and give me that sparkle back.”
Sometimes a hot flannel makes your eyes feel soothed and relaxed, but a cold compress is probably going to be more effective at reducing the bags under your eyes.
Ice cubes or applying anything really cold, such as a gua sha or jade roller that has been left in the freezer, to your under eyes will reduce swelling and shrink the dilated blood vessels causing the problem.
If it’s too uncomfortable to hold an ice cube on the area, wrap a few into a clean washcloth first and then apply it to your under eyes.
Once you’ve tackled the problem as much as you can, it’s time to start camouflaging what’s left of the bags.
Pink, yellow and orange colour correctors under a good, thick concealer will do the job at disguising the dark, bluish-purple under-eye circles, but you should keep the rest of your makeup to a minimum.
Bryony said: “I like to keep things simple for my eyes, so I start with a cream eyeshadow. This is easy to apply and takes a matter of seconds.
“I then take a bronzing powder and sweep it across the crease of my eye to add definition. You then want to choose a lengthening mascara that has a long-lasting formula that doesn’t smudge or drop but really helps to emphasise the eyes.
“For an extra boost to tired eyes try adding a little cream eyeliner to the waterline as this will really help them to pop and look more awake.”
Once you’ve finished your basic eye look, add some cream blusher and a lip balm to flash your face and avoid dried-chapped lips – this touch of colour will distract from any detectable tiredness in your eyes.
If all else fails and you can’t manage to get rid of your eye bags naturally, there are plenty of cosmetic procedures available to do the job permanently.
