Watch a Master Barber Add Volume to Thinning Hair With a Simple Layered Scissor Cut

Thinning hair is an issue that affects a lot of men, but it remains a source of embarrassment to many—which means some guys may not seek out any guidance on what they can do about their receding hairlines or prominent crowns. Fortunately, there are plenty of hairstyles and grooming tips for men who are thinning on top.

In a pre-pandemic video for the Beardbrand channel on YouTube, British barber Darren Mahesh Hayward gives a haircut to teacher Mark whose fine hair makes his bald spot quite visible. “I have the same problem,” says Hayward. “Guys who are thinning on top, what I’m going to say is; the longer the hair is on the top, the wispier it will look.”

Hayward shapes the hairline first, tapering the sides in and leaving enough length at the front to give Mark some styling options. He then begins cutting the hair on the sides in the direction that he wants the hair to fall. Because it’s all combed in the same direction, it looks longer than it actually is: he’s created the illusion of there being more hair there. He then combs the hair on top down in order to connect it with the sides, and blend the layers together.

“The top will naturally just sit in with the sides, there won’t be a disconnection there,” he says. “Where it’s quite transparent, I’m going to just take that off. It looks like it’s quite short, but when it’s laying down, it doesn’t look any different… It’s not how much you take off, it’s where you take it away from.”
