Brian May nearly died of stomach explosion as he details heart attack recovery

Brian May revealed he was ‘nearly killed’ by a stomach explosion, as his health battles continued.

The Queen star has had a tough few months after he suffered a heart attack, which he told fans about in May.

And, detailing his illness, the 73-year-old explained that his recovery has felt like a ‘long climb back’.

‘I’ve had complications due to the drugs I’m on, one of which was a stomach explosion that nearly killed me,’ he said in the Times.

‘The heart attack was a symbol of an arterial disease, but I don’t drink, I don’t smoke, I don’t have high cholesterol and I was exercising through the tour, so why did it happen?

‘At least I now have a heart that is working far better than it was.’

Appearing on The One Show on Friday, Brian was adamant that he was ‘turning a corner’ and had regained his ‘sparkle’.

‘I’m okay now. That’s all you need to know. I got hit pretty hard and pretty low,’ the music icon insisted. ‘A series of medical incidents, I guess you could say. It takes you very low.

‘So I am now on physical exercise and cardio rehab and I think I am turning a corner.

‘I feel like I have got my sparkle back, just in the last few days, actually. But it has been a while. It was a tough one.’

Brian revealed that he had a ‘small’ heart attack in May, in a video he shared on Instagram.

Chatting to concerned fans, the We Will Rock You star explained that it didn’t do him ‘any harm’, and was just ‘40 minutes of pain’ in his chest.

He was treated for pain over a rip in his gluteus maximus – as well as a compressed sciatic nerve – when doctors also discovered three blocked arteries.

When he was seen at the hospital, the doctors warned that he would need to either have a triple heart bypass or stents put in.

‘I thank them from the bottom of my heart,’ he added. ‘I think I’m in good shape for some time to come.

‘I’m good, I’m here, and I’m ready to rock.’
