Harry Styles' 'bomb' Vogue cover defended by US congresswoman
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has become the latest public figure to defend Harry Styles following backlash over his historic Vogue cover.
The One Direction star faced criticism for wearing a dress in the fashion bible’s December issue, which was also the first US Vogue cover to feature a solo male.
Throwing her support behind Harry, 24, US congresswoman Alexandria wrote in her Instagram stories: ‘It looks wonderful. The masculine and feminine elements are balanced beautifully – the hair and jacket styling give me James Dean vibes too.
‘Some people are mad at it (because) some folks are very sensitive to examining and exploring gender roles in society. Perhaps for some people it provokes some anger or insecurity around masculinity/femininity/etc. If it does, then maybe that’s part of the point.’
The 31-year-old, also known as AOC, urged those uncomfortable with the cover to ‘sit’ with their reaction and ‘examine, explore, engage and grow with it’.
She then questioned: ‘What’s the point of creating things if they don’t make people think? Or feel or reflect? Especially as an artist or creative?
‘Who wants to see the same thing all the time? And never explore their assumptions?’
Alexandria concluded: ‘Anyways it looks bomb so…’
The representative has made a name for herself championing progressive causes and is seen as a leading light of the Democrat party, and a possible future presidential candidate when she is eligible to run in four years.
She won her reelection bid for a seat in Congress in New York earlier this month.
The debate surrounding Harry’s Vogue cover and the idea of masculinity was accelerated when controversial political pundit Candace Owens tweeted: ‘There is no society that can survive without strong men.
‘The East knows this. In the west, the steady feminization of our men at the same time that Marxism is being taught to our children is not a coincidence. It is an outright attack. Bring back manly men.’
Harry’s friend and actress Olivia Wilde hit back: ‘You’re pathetic.’
Several others stars have come out in support of Harry including Logan Paul, while the singer’s mother said she was responsible for his love of dresses.
