I'm Obsessed With Jennifer Lopez Calling Her Engagement Ring From Ben Affleck 'Whatever'
Jennifer Lopez is currently engaged to Alex Rodriguez, but you may have forgotten that she almost walked down the aisle with Ben Affleck.
"Bennifer" was born when the famous couple met in 2002 while filming Gigli, and Affleck proposed shortly after with a 6.1-carat pink diamond engagement ring. However, the duo called it quits in 2004, just four days before the wedding.
Now, in a recent at-home video hangout with Apple Music host Zane Lowe, Lopez opened up about quarantine life with her family, which brought up some old memories after the group watched the 1968 classic Funny Girl starring Barbra Streisand.
“I met her [Streisand] at an Oscar party, years ago, and I was at the time engaged to Ben Affleck, and she’s really into diamonds, which I didn’t know,” Lopez said, according to Billboard. “He had given me a pink diamond, which got a lot of press and was whatever. I loved getting it, don’t get me wrong. So, she came up to me, and like, she’s heard of it. I’m like, ‘Oh my God.’ And she’s like, ‘Can I see your ring?’ And she asked me about the ring, but then she asked me—and I thought it was so strange—about being famous, and how I handle it.”
I'm sorry, wait. Can we go back to the part where Lopez said, "He had given me a pink diamond, which got a lot of press and was whatever." Whatever. I'm truly cackling right now. Somewhere, Ben Affleck is shaking. (Lopez clarified the whatever is more of a nod to the circus surrounding the engagement ring than the ring itself, but still. I'm living!)
The $2.5 million pink-diamond ring in question. You know, whatever.
I'm also screaming at another revelation from this interview: that Lopez recently ate McDonalds for the first time "in years." “I haven’t had it in years and my son wanted to get some," she said. "I wanted the sundae, the apple pie, I don’t know when we’re going to go out again." Between this and learning that Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have been ordering groceries from Trader Joe's in L.A., I've never felt so similar to the rich and famous.
Of course, I'm not the one currently sporting a $1.4 million dollar ring from Rodriguez, which he used to propose to Lopez back in March, 2019. Ya know, another whatever moment!
In light of the coronavirus pandemic, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez have put their wedding on hold. "It did affect it a little bit," she told Ellen DeGeneres on April 7. "So we’ll see what happens now…. I really don’t know what’s gonna happen now as far as dates or anything like that. We are just kind of in a holding pattern like the rest of the world. So, again, it’s just something we have to wait and see in a few months how this all pans out.”
I'm sure whenever the big day happens, it'll be anything but whatever.
