Kate Garraway claps for the carers as husband fights coronavirus ‘You are all amazing’

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway, 52, confirmed her husband Derek Draper, 52, was taken ill with coronavirus last week, and last night Kate and her children joined in with the nationwide Clap for Carers to honour the key workers in this difficult time. The GMB host and her children clapped for the key workers with their neighbours last night.

The TV presenter shared a video of a firework display that her neighbours put on for the duration of the nationwide applause.

She wrote to her 644,000 followers on Instagram alongside the video: “The neighbours added some extra sparkle to tonight’s #clapforcarers.

“Thank you thank you – you are all amazing.”

Soon after Kate shared her video online, friends and followers of the presenter sent their love onto Kate and her family.

Presenter Luisa Zissman, 32, wrote to Kate: “Sending lots of love,” while former campmate and Girls Aloud star Nadine Coyle, 34, also sent on her love.

TV star Myleene Klass, 42, also commented: “Thinking of you and your family Kate x.”

Following in her friends’ steps, fans then began to wish Derek well on her post.

One wrote: “Wishing you and your family all the best wishes and hope your husband is doing ok in hospital x.”

Another told the journalist: “Thoughts are with you and the children dear Kate and sending positive vibes to your darling Derek.

“Stay safe and look forward to seeing your lovely smiley face again, in the not too distant future. X,” they continued.

This morning on Good Morning Britain, Kate’s co-presenter Ben Shephard, 45, read an update regarding her husband’s health condition.

Ben said: “Kate has given us a message she would like us to share with you all, this morning,

“Derek remains in intensive care and is still very ill. I’m afraid it remains an excruciatingly worrying time.”

The presenter continued: “The NHS team who have been working on him have all been extraordinary and I know it’s only their professionalism, dedication and bravery that has kept Derek with us so far.”

Kate went on to say: “I also know they are working just as hard on all the patients in their care.

“It’s hard to find the right words because thank you alone just doesn’t seem enough, but I do thank them with all my heart as I know Derek also would if he could.”

The Smooth radio presenter added: “I also want to thank everyone who has sent messages of support. I’m sorry I’ve not been able to respond to them, but I hope you understand I’m focussing on Derek and my family right now.

“However, in quieter moments, I am seeing them and they are so comforting and wonderful to read.”

Ben also shared Kate’s update on Twitter, writing: “Morning all – lots of you have been asking how @kategarraway and her husband Derek are after he was admitted to hospital last week with Coronavirus.

“Kate has asked us to share this message with you.”

It was confirmed that after Derek tested positive for COVID-19 last week, he had been moved over to an intensive care unit.
