Kate Garraway returns to social media after absence to share an update on husband Derek amid health battle

Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway has taken to social media to share a poignant message about her husband Derek Draper.

The star explained her social media absence, after not posting on Instagram since December and she shared an update on her husband’s condition.

Derek was admitted to hospital with coronavirus last year and he has undergone a huge health battle since.

And now Kate, 53, has said his journey is “far from over,” as she wrote: “Hello everyone – I've not been on here for a while as I've been taking time to gather myself and focus like everyone else on getting through this latest lockdown.

"The pandemic is far from over and so is Derek’s journey but I have decided to share our story and what's helping to keep me going, as we all try to work out what our new futures will look like."

Kate informed her 970,000 Instagram followers that she’ll be releasing a book named The Power Of Hope this year.

Kate continued: “I am really hoping that it will help you with all that you are going through. You can pre-order your copy of The Power of Hope from Amazon, Waterstones, WHSmith or Bookshop.org.”

Commenting on her post, fellow TV star Lorraine Kelly penned: “Hope is incredibly powerful,” while Good Morning Britain star Charlotte Hawkins shared love heart emojis.

The book will detail what Kate and her family, including her two children Darcey and Billy, have been through during Derek’s terrible battle with Covid-19, and it will be released in April.

Kate, who recently admitted she’s “really struggling” to homeschool her children, said on Good Morning Britain: “While my experience of Covid is extreme and extraordinary, I’m only too aware that this virus has impacted every single one of us.

“We’re all going through this, to some degree.

“By telling the story of Derek’s illness and how it has altered our family’s lives, I hope to be able to reach out to others who are suffering.

“If writing about my experience of facing fear, coping daily with an uncertain future and finding strength for the sake of my kids can help another person feeling lost or in despair, it’ll mean a lot.”

Derek, 53, was admitting into hospital with coronavirus in March 2020. He was then put into an induced coma.

In October, Kate revealed her husband said his first word in 214 days. Derek mouthed the word “pain” twice as doctors moved his body to prevent him from seizing up.

She told The Sun at the time: “It’s a case of trying to balance belief, hope, optimism with reality. But we have had a breakthrough which was both amazing yet ­heartbreaking.”
