Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway, 53, is currently off work from the ITV show, while her husband Derek Draper remains in a coma in hospital.

It’s unbearably, gut-wrenchingly sad

Kate’s husband Derek was hospitalised with coronavirus back in March.

The virus has led him to have further health complications such as holes in his lungs and heart, and it has also made him diabetic.

In his most recent column with the Daily Mail, Piers Morgan discussed, 55, how he first met Kate’s husband and the off-camera advice he gave her during her ordeal.

Piers said he advised Kate to treat her spouse’s health battle as a breaking news story in his one of many private chats with his co-presenter.

Upon learning the news of Derek’s coronavirus diagnosis, he said: “I gave her the only suggestion I could think of that might actually help such a good, experienced journalist – to treat what was happening like a massive breaking news story and behave accordingly.

“It’s the mentality I’ve always tried to use myself when I’ve faced any kind of professional or personal crisis.”

He added of his advice to Kate: “Try to keep emotion out of it with the doctors and nurses’ I said.

“‘I imagine they’re getting overwhelmed by this virus and must have so many emotional relatives who aren’t allowed to visit the hospital bombarding them all day long.

“‘If you stay calm, and focused, and research everything very thoroughly, you’ll ask better questions and probably get more out of them’.”

Piers went on to say that ITV’s Doctor Hilary has also given Kate professional advice, away from the screens.

The Good Morning Britain presenter also recalled how he first met Kate’s spouse, before they married in 2005.

Recalling the moment, he said: “Derek was a Labour Party adviser whom I locked horns with many times in the late 1990s during my editorship of the Daily Mirror – and when they told me at a party in 2005 that they were getting married, I joked, ‘If I’d known the bar was that low, I’d have had a crack myself!’”

Kate and Derek were due to renew their vows this summer after the latter proposed again following her I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! stint last year.

“Kate doesn’t even know if she will ever get Derek home again, let alone to renew those vows,” Piers added.

“It’s unbearably, gut-wrenchingly sad.”

Earlier this month, Kate gave her first television interview about her husband’s health battle.

As expected, the mother-of-two got emotional as she gave her colleagues Ben Shephard and Ranvir Singh and viewers an update about Derek’s progress.

She told her colleagues and fans that while he is now coronavirus free, he is still “very, very sick” but said she was remaining hopeful.

“He’s still with us. He has fought the most extraordinary battle,” she said.

“But you know, the fact that he is still here and is holding on – I’m just so grateful he’s still here.

“And I’ve got the option of praying and hoping.”
