Strictly Come Dancing star Katya Jones, 31, has detailed her latest venture away from the BBC show while in lockdown. It comes as the Russian-born dancer has been keeping herself busy following the coronavirus pandemic.

The Latin champion has spilled on her former husband Neil Jones, 38, and his Strictly dance partner Alex Scott, 35, who were paired together on the BBC dance series.

Katya unveiled her latest creative mission as she opened up on a gift she gave the dancing duo.

The BBC professional revealed she had taken on upcycling – which is the process of transforming old products into something new and usable.

She recently teamed up with Oxfam, and gifted Neil and Alex new and improved denim jackets.

Katya revealed: “For Alex Scott, I made these denim jackets where the person gives me their old jacket and I decorate them to suit their personality. I’ve also done one for Neil as well.”

Katya and Neil announced their split in a joint statement in August last year but the couple have remained friends.

The professional dancer’s creative mission wasn’t restricted to Neil and Alex, as she also created designs for her other Strictly co-stars including Janette Manrara and her husband Aljaz Skorjanec.

Katya continued: “For Aljaz and Janette, I made it for their wedding. They wore my first pair of denim jackets – I’ve created quite a few. It’s really nice to do.

“Also Giovanni [Pernice] and Luba [Mushtuk]. They’re really cool. I’m proud of them actually.”

Her comments come after Katya had previously announced that she had decided to give up buying new clothes for a year.

Discussing her passion for creating, she commented: “The thing is, I love fashion.

“Before I used to buy clothes all the time and follow trends – I’ve got a quirky style. Also, I love sewing, making costumes and clothes for myself.”

Katya continued: “So when I decided to actively take part in sustainable fashion it was perfect for me to start upcycling.

“Taking my own items and creating new items out of them. It’s so much of fun and you can create unique pieces that nobody else has.

“Also, it’s environmentally friendly so it was perfect for me. I love making, creating and designing clothes.”

Meanwhile, the BBC favourite joined a host of famous celebrities to help raise money to support Oxfam’s coronavirus appeal.

More than £7,000 was raised after donations from celebrities and artists including Katya, Basement Jaxx, Deborah Meaden, Fatboy Slim, Dame Helen Mirren, Liam Gallagher, Paloma Faith, Rankin and Simon Pegg were auctioned on eBay earlier this month.

Katya chose to auction her beloved silver jumpsuit which went under the hammer.

Speaking about her work with the charity, the Strictly star commented: “Me and Oxfam connected and we’ve tried to work together during these tough times of coronavirus.

“Oxfam has been raising money for the poorest communities and refugee camps.”

Katya added: “Of course, everyone is clearing out their wardrobes and getting rid of the things they no longer want and to donate. They were able to raise £7,000 and that’s incredible to help the crisis.”

Oxfam is a Disasters Emergency Committee member charity which has launched an appeal to help protect the world’s most vulnerable people through the coronavirus pandemic.
