Little Mix vow to continue on as trio after Jesy Nelson leaves band
Jesy Nelson has bowed out of Little Mix forever — blaming the ‘constant pressure’ of girl band fame for sinking her mental health.
The 29-year-old announced the shock news on Instagram last night, after taking a month-long hiatus from the group for ‘medical reasons’.
She told fans she can no longer live up to the ‘expectation’ after nine years in the quartet.
Nelson said she had made the decision with a ‘heavy heart’ and said being in the The X Factor-winning band had been the most ‘incredible time of my life’.
But she also admitted pop stardom had also lost its sheen over time.
‘The truth is, recently, being in the band has really taken a toll on my mental health,’ she wrote. ‘I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to expectations very hard.’
The star said she didn’t know if going it alone in the pop world was in her stars, but added: ‘There comes a time in life when we need to reinvest in taking care of ourselves rather than focusing on making other people happy. I feel like now is the time to begin that process.
‘So after much consideration and with a heavy heart, I’m announcing I’m leaving Little Mix.’
She told her 7.3million followers: ‘I need to spend some time with the people I love, doing things that make me happy.
‘I’m ready to embark on a new chapter in my life — I’m not sure what it’s going to look like right now, but I hope you’ll still be there to support me.’
Thanking her three remaining bandmates she said: ‘Most of all I want to say thank you to Jade, Perrie and Leigh-Anne for creating the most amazing memories I will never forget.
‘I hope that you’ll continue to fulfil all of your dreams and keep on making music that people love.’
Her former bandmates responded: ‘This is an incredibly sad time for all of us but we are fully supportive of Jesy. We love her very much and agree it is so important that she does what is right for her mental health and well-being.’
And the Confetti singers vowed to soldier on as a trio and crack on with tour plans, saying ‘the three of us are not ready for it to be over’.
Jesy’s shock announcement capped what has been a tumultuous 18 months for the star.
She missed the final of the band’s BBC talent show Little Mix: The Search and the MTV EMA Awards last month. And in September she suffered a panic attack during the band’s Radio 1 Live Lounge performance.
That came after she split with former Love Island star Chris Hughes in spring.
Last year, she won Guilty Pleasures’ Celeb of the Year trophy for bravely opening up about being trolled on documentary Odd One Out for which she also won a NTA award.
Tay’s days of baring soul are over for evermore
Taylor Swift is chuffed she no longer has to spill her own love life, woes and feuds as surprise new album Evermore is flying without her secrets.
Tay Tay, who dates actor Joe Alwyn, realised she was fuelling ‘clickbait’ gossip about herself with thinly veiled ditties that filled her 2017 record Reputation.
Sharing her relief that fans are buying into her new tunes, she said: ‘I was so happy. My world felt opened up creatively. There was a point I got to where I only wrote diaristic songs. I felt that was unsustainable for my future. It felt like too hot of a microscope. I was like, “Why am I just writing about my life?”
‘In my bad days, I would feel like I was loading a cannon of clickbait. That’s not what I wanted for my life.’
Swift, who turned 31 on Sunday, dropped Evermore last week only five months after July’s mellow offering Folklore.
She said: ‘When I put out Folklore, I felt like, “If I can do this thing, where I get to create characters in this mythological town or wherever, I can reflect my emotions onto what I think they (fans) might be feeling. I can create stories and characters but I don’t have to feel like I’m just giving the tabloids ammunition”.’
The US pop queen said she considered quitting music after Reputation.
‘I felt there would be a point in my life where I could no longer do that and still maintain a place of good mental and emotional health,’ she explained to Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. ‘So what I felt after we put out Folklore was, “Wow! People are into this too”.
‘It was a real breakthrough moment of excitement and happiness, because this year has been hell on earth for everyone.’
Katy goes back to her roots as she shows off dark side
Katy Perry’s fans prefer her as a Dark Horse after she went back to black.
The new mum, who welcomed Orlando Bloom’s daughter Daisy in August, lived out her first days of motherhood as a blonde bombshell — but has returned to her darker side.
Perry donned a black wig, teamed with sexy leather elbow-length black gloves, as she unveiled herself as ‘Mother’ with a black heart emoji during filming for American Idol.
And online followers lapped it up, with one saying: ‘And she is back.’
Another said: ‘I miss your dark hair.’
The 36-year old US singer has been cracking fans up with her post-partum honesty, including recently flashing her Spandex undies.
Matt’s there for Twigs as she sues ‘abusive’ ex Shia
Matt Healy dubbed FKA Twigs the ‘love of my life’ as he threw his support behind the star, who has accused ex-lover Shia LaBeouf of abusing her.
The two musos have been camera shy since hooking up at the start of the year.
But The 1975 frontman, 31, stepped up after it was revealed Twigs is suing her movie star ex. She says LaBeouf ‘physically, emotionally and mentally’ abused her ‘many times’ during an 11-month relationship that ended in 2019.
Posting a snap of his lady, Guys singer Matt dubbed her an ‘icon’ and ‘legend’.
Twigs — real name Tahliah Debrett Barnett — launched her lawsuit against LaBeouf, 34, at LA’s Superior Court on Friday and told The New York Times: ‘What I went through with Shia was the worst thing I’ve ever been through in the whole of my life.’
The 32-year-old alleges she once woke up to find the actor choking her and claims he knowingly gave her an STD.
LaBeouf has said of the claims: ‘I have no excuses for my alcoholism or aggression. I have been abusive to myself and have a history of hurting the people closest to me.
‘I’m ashamed of that and sorry to those I hurt.’
