X Factor judge Simon Cowell, 61, has branded himself “lucky” for breaking his back after falling off his electric bike, as it meant he couldn’t travel. Promoting the new series of America’s Got Talent, the star candidly admitted that the accident was a blessing in disguise as it put a stop to him travelling during the coronavirus pandemic.

Weirdly, it was a good thing that it happened

Addressing the tragic accident which occured at his LA home in August last year, the star spoke openly about the extent of his injuries.

He said: “I was a millimetre away from just cutting my back in half.

“So I consider myself lucky.”

Simon went on to reveal that he sees the accident in a positive light – as it stopped him from continuing his jet-set lifestyle amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“Weirdly, it was a good thing that it happened,” he said.

“I didn’t get Covid because I wasn’t able to travel and I probably would’ve done my fair share last year,” the media mogul explained.

Earlier this year the businessman broke his silence on the injuries he sustained from an electric bike accident at his Malibu home.

The accident left him needing six hours of surgery due to his injuries, which left him with metal rods and screws in his back.

The star said: “It could have been a lot worse. When I saw the X-ray, I really nearly could have smashed my spine to pieces, so I literally wouldn’t have been able to walk.

“I knew I’d broken my back the minute I landed. It was really, really kind of sudden and it hurt.”

Speaking to ex-girlfriend Terri Seymour on Extra, Simon went on to credit his girlfriend Lauren Silverman, 43, and seven-year-old son Eric for helping him get through his recovery.

Simon told Terri: “In fact, you and Lauren [Silverman] were outside the hospital all night long, I remember.”

Terri then informed him: “Lauren was amazing, running around after you, nursing you back to health.”

Simon gushed: “She was amazing.

“Both her and Eric, they were like my support. I couldn’t have gotten through it without them, so we got closer.”

The star went on to relay that after son Eric saw him with metal rods and screws in his back, he called his dad Ironman.

The entrepreneur said it was “the sweetest thing” as he admitted he was concerned about his son’s reaction to the way he looked.

Following the incident, which saw the star and bike fly up in the air, Simon tweeted: “Some good advice… If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time.”

He added: “I have broken part of my back. Thank you to everyone for your kind messages.”

He then said in a second tweet: “And a massive thank you to all the nurses and doctors. Some of the nicest people I have ever met. Stay safe everyone Simon.”
