The Truth About Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Famous Family

Known to fans as “The Greek Freak,” Milwaukee Bucks star and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is a force to be reckoned with on the court. But as it turns out, he’s not the only Greek Freak in his family. Giannis is actually the middle child of five boys, all of whom are athletes. So who exactly are his famous brothers? Let’s take a look.

Two of his brothers, Kostas and Thanasis, also play in the NBA. Thanasis may be older, but he was actually drafted a year after Giannis. According to Sportscasting, Thanasis was drafted by the New York Knicks in 2014 but initially played for the Knicks’ D-league affiliate, the Westchester Knicks. He finally made his NBA debut with the Knicks in 2016 but only got six minutes of playing time over two games. After the Knicks released him from his contract, he went back to playing in Europe until 2019, when he returned to the NBA and signed with the Bucks, where he reunited with his younger brother.

Kostas, Giannis’ younger brother, made it to the NBA in 2018, when the Philadelphia 76ers selected him as their final draft pick and immediately traded him to the Dallas Mavericks. Sportscasting reports that like Thanasis, Kostas was a bit of a benchwarmer, getting only 11 minutes of playing time before the team waived him. Per Basketball-Reference.com, he signed a contract with the Los Angeles Lakers in November 2020.

Not all the brothers are in the NBA … yet

Alex, the youngest of the bunch, has his eye on the NBA too but has decided to take a less conventional approach to getting there. Rather than playing college ball in the U.S., he decided to move to Europe and play professionally. Alex told EuroHoop that he believed playing among the pros would most quickly and effectively prepare him to join the ranks of his brothers in the NBA. “I will have to train and compete against grown men,” he said. “I will experience strong competition and pressure and I will evolve on every level.” Alex currently plays for UCAM Murcia CB in Spain.

Francis, the oldest Antentokounmpo brother, plays soccer. Although there is not much publicly available information about his athletic career, Essentially Sports reports that he “primarily plays as a midfielder with Greek lower league sides.” In addition to sports, Francis is also a musician. He released his first single and music video, “Shekosi,” in July 2020.
