Vernon Kay puzzled by AJ Pritchard’s I’m A Celebrity claims on camp conditions ‘Really?’

I'm A Celeb: Vernon Kay denies the castle had heating

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant Vernon Kay has addressed AJ Pritchard’s claims the campmates slept under heaters while holed up in Gwrych Castle in North Wales. Former Family Fortunes host, 46, appeared confused when he was quizzed by Phillip Schofield, 58, and Holly Willoughby, 39, about the ex-Strictly Come Dancing professional’s show claims.

The 26-year-old previously said the I’m A Celebrity stars were provided with heaters due to the cold conditions.

The dancer made the revelation after he was quizzed about living in the castle during his podcast with his brother Curtis Pritchard, AJ vs Curtis.

AJ said: “It was cold. I always had my long johns on but, yeah, one or two days you would wear, for example, long johns, trousers, top…”

AJ’s brother Curtis added: “You were sleeping naked one night weren’t you?”

“OK so, we had heat lamps above and you probably couldn’t see on camera,” the former Strictly star replied.

“So the heat lamps would maybe turn on at about 2am and about 5am to make it feel warm in the sleeping areas.

“So one night I went to bed thinking, ‘Oh My God I’m going to be absolutely freezing,’ so I put on a million layers, and had a hot flush at 4 or 5am,” AJ explained.

Curtis said: “You had heat lamps in a, however old that castle is, you had heat lamps? What is this?

“No I don’t think they should have put the heat lamps in there.”

When quizzed about the dancer’s claims, Vernon provided a different version of events as he dismissed AJ’s comments.

Asked about the campmates having heaters, Tess Daly’s husband pulled a confused face and said: “Really?”

Vernon went on: “There was one heater in my living quarters but they were very rarely used, I’ll be honest with you, it was cold at night.

“It was freezing during the day because of the draft from the door that went into the courtyard, that sometimes would remain open so the draft that came through and the heat that we got was very, very limited. It wasn’t on all the time.

“We were cold at night, but they did provide us with amazing sleeping bags so maybe he was having a hot flush!”

Vernon also dished on the shower conditions as he explained the water was far from hot.

He commented: “That’s all it was, warm. It wasn’t hot, it wasn’t steaming, it was just warm.

“But, when you’re covered in fish guts, offal, smell and stench, maggots and cockroaches anything will do.”

Vernon added: “You just wanna get it all off you, get your fingers in your hair with the shampoo – which was limited, by the way – and just cleanse yourself.”

The former T4 presenter admitted the showers were a “solace” for him and the one place to relax.

“The showers were a place of solace, it was a place of tranquility while you were in the show because you washed off the trial and got on with the day,” Vernon remarked.
