Captain Tom Moore’s charity single is top of the UK charts as fundraiser hits £23 million
Captain Tom Moore has raised the nation’s spirits as well as raising over 23 million for the NHS.
However, the 99-year-old war veteran has just collaborated with singer Michael Ball to release a charity single, and it is already shot to the top of the UK iTunes charts.
The song, a lovely rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, from the 1945 musical Carousel, has narrowly beaten Vera Lynn’s war time classic We’ll Meet again, to secure the top spot.
Captain Tom has become a beacon of hope amid the coronavirus pandemic, having raised millions for NHS Charities Together which helps those on the frontline to battle the illness.
With humble aspirations, the former British Army officer hoped to raise £1000 by completing 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday on 30 April. But, he smashed his target much earlier that expected and says he will continue to walk if people are still donating.
Due to his resounding success, the war veteran has recorded a duet with Micheal Ball of the 1945 classic that has become the song associated with the caregivers on the front line, and features the NHS Voices of Care Choir.

The single begins with Captain Tom reading the words like a poem, saying: “Hold your head up high and don't be afraid of the dark.”
Michael, 57, was keen to get their song to the number one spot ahead of Captain Tom’s birthday.
He said: “There isn't one of us who has failed to be inspired by Captain Tom Moore. It is one of the single greatest honours of my career to sing with this genuine national hero, supported by the incredible NHS Voices for Care Choir.

“Not only is he the biggest single fundraiser in British history and a decorated war veteran, he is the most charming man you could ever wish to meet.
“Hopefully he can now add singing star to his many talents. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could give him a number one record for his 100th birthday!”
The 99 year old said: “I never in my wildest dreams imagined I would be releasing a single with Michael Ball OBE, but I also never thought it possible for me to walk in the garden and raise millions.
"So why not sing, spread some cheer and again – raise money for our national heroes. NHS this one is for you!”
