Cost-effective ways to improve your memory from colouring to Sudoku

WHAT day is it? Don’t worry if you had to think about it.

It is one of six things that slip our minds every day, according to a recent survey.

It may seem harmless but forgetting things, such as parking tickets, and misplacing our phones costs an average of £117.69 every year.

So I spoke to psychologist Dr Becky Spelman to get her top tips on improving the memory . . .

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Becky says: “Certain food nutrients can boost memory function. Also look to minimise sugar and alcohol intake as elevated glucose in the bloodstream can result in memory deficit.

My tip: Blueberries help fight memory decline. A 150g punnet is on offer at Aldi until Wednesday for 69p, down from 99p. That’s far cheaper than paying £2 at Tesco.

BRAIN TRAINING: Becky says: “Video games can boost memory and the likes of chess and sudoku can help to keep your brain in shape by enhancing overall cognitive ability.”

My tip: You can get a book of 365 Sudoku puzzles at The Works for £5, down from £9.99. Or download the app for free.

DELIVER THE GOODS: Becky says: “Setting up regular delivery services, whether it be prescriptions or food, is a quick and convenient way of ensuring things are not forgotten.

My tip: Repeat prescriptions are best to ensure you don’t leave it too late.

WORK OF ART: Becky says: “Researchers found that drawing can be a more effective method of retaining new information than rewriting notes.”

My tip: A 12-pack of Crayola colouring pencils is now £1.50, down from £2 at Tesco.

SLEEP IT OFF: Becky says: “Lack of sleep impairs cognitive ability as the part of the brain that works to solidify memories from temporary to longer-term storage is activated when you are sleeping.”

My tip: Try Feather And Down Sweet Dreams pillow spray, £7 at Boots. It is a cheaper version of This Works Deep Sleep pillow spray, £19.50 at Holland and Barrett.
