Easter eggs: How to make your own Easter egg at home

Easter bank holiday weekend is normally full of family gatherings and fun, but this year everyone must stay at home and follow social distancing rules. One way to enjoy yourself at home is by making your own Easter egg, using a balloon. Express.co.uk has put together a step-by-step guide.

How to make your own Easter egg

What you will need

  • 1 x balloon, blown up to a small size
  • 400-500g chocolate of choice
  • A spoon for stirring
  • A heatproof bowl
  • A saucepan filled with water
  • Roasting tray lined with greaseproof paper
  • Extra chocolate, icing or sweet treats for decorating (optional)

Instructions

Step One

First of all, you have to melt the chocolate.

Break your chosen chocolate into small chunks.

Place this over a saucepan filled with very hot (but not boiling) water on the hob on medium heat.

Make sure that the bowl is not in direct contact with the water, but is resting safely over the pan.

Melt your chocolate slowly, stirring occasionally so that all of the chocolate chunks melt.

Once your chocolate resembles a silky smooth mixture, take it off the heat and allow to cool down slightly.

Step Two

It’s time to make your mould and create the egg.

Take a balloon and inflate it to a small size.

Holding the balloon by the knotted end, dunk it into the chocolate and coat the whole thing.

Leave only the knot uncovered.

Then, place the balloon onto a tray lined with greaseproof paper and pop in the fridge.

After 20 minutes, take your mould out of the fridge.

Holding the balloon by the knotted end, pierce near the nozzle using a knife or some scissors (adults only).

Patch up the hole with some additional melted complete to complete the egg.

Step Three

Now for the fun part of the process- decorating!

Decorate your egg with chocolate buttons, sweeties – anything, as long as it’s edible.

Once you have finished in the decoration station, place your egg in the fridge for at least an hour or two before getting stuck in.
