Elvis Presley affair: Ann-Margret recalls electric first moments with the King

Elvis Presley starred in a huge amount of films over the years. Showing off just how talented he was, Presley sung and danced his way through a slew of blockbuster films, starting with Love Me Tender in 1956, all the way to 1969 in Change of Habit.

However it was the 1964 flick, Viva Las Vegas, which changed everything for him.

Presley was a hard worker, and a dedicated showman.

But even he couldn’t shy away from his newest co-star Ann-Margret.

Ann-Margret and Presley infamous engaged in an affair for some time before Elvis broke it off and married Priscilla Presley.

Over the years a lot of speculation has surfaced surrounding the extent of the relationship between Presley and Ann-Margret – but she did detail it in her own words at one point.

In her autobiography, titled ‘My Story’, she spoke of a number of events which involved both her and Presley.

The first time they met, though, was quite an interesting scenario.

She wrote: “Except for a piano, the MGM soundstage where Elvis and I met was empty.

“In the background, a few of his guys hung around observing their boss, a ritual I would soon come to expect.

“Under the watchful gaze of director George Sidney, a studio photographer snapped shots of what the film company executives figured would be a historic moment.”

Going on to detail how she was introduced to Presley formally, she continued: “‘Elvis Presley, I’d like you to meet a wonderful young lady, Ann-Margret,’ said George Sidney.

“‘Ann-Margret, this is Elvis Presley.’ The significance was lost on Elvis and me.”

But while the formality was ever present during this meeting, the pair simply couldn’t help but hit it off straight away.

“I reached out my hand and he shook it gently,” she wrote.

“‘I’ve heard a lot about you,’ we said at the same time, which made us laugh and broke the ice.”

The pair’s chemistry was evident just from the first few seconds of meeting one another.

According to Biography.Elvis.Com, months later Presley asked his foreman Joe Esposito what was so special the relationship he had with Ann-Margret.

Joe reportedly replied: “She’s the female you.”

Joe wasn’t the only member of Presley’s entourage who was fond of Ann-Margret.

According to the book, Elvis and the Memphis Mafia, his team enjoyed hanging around with her as well.

Marty Lacker, of the aforementioned Mafia, wrote in the book: “I knew Elvis had to make a decision between them. And I thought if push came to shove, he would choose Ann.”

He added: “[Ann-Margret] used to write him letters and sign them ‘Bunny’ or ‘Thumper.’

“And she’d call Graceland and use the same code. If Elvis had ended up with Thumper, this whole story might have ended differently.”
