Elvis Presley: Lisa Marie on still using Graceland as family home – ‘A VERY special place’

After Elvis Presley died upstairs at Graceland in 1977, his mansion was left to his daughter Lisa Marie. And in 1982 the home was opened to the public as a museum. To this day Graceland is the second most visited house in the US after the White House, but did you know The King’s daughter still very much uses it as a home?

Back in 2013, Elvis’ only child told USA Today: “It’s a very special place…it shuts down quite nice at night.

“I have family that I love very much who live there in Memphis.

“When I go… I visit [Graceland]. We have dinner there.

“My family still goes there, and we still have a life there.”

Asked what she specifically gets up to, Lisa Marie said: “Thanksgiving a year or two ago.

“Mom wasn’t there then, but we’re going to be there in a couple of weeks, together.”

But when and how does Elvis’ daughter use Graceland as a home when it’s open to the public?

She revealed: “I’m usually there after hours, typically, but occasionally while tours are happening.”

Lisa Marie even stays overnight sometimes, using Graceland’s off-limits upstairs area.

At the time, she said: “I have stayed there in the past but not recently, no.”

Earlier this year, Graceland archivist Angie Marchese revealed in a live Instagram Q&A: “One of Lisa’s favourite things to do here is to actually share with her kids and her friends her memories of Graceland.

“And do things that Elvis and her used to do like ride golf carts or see the horses and things like that.”

The archivist added: “But they do come quite often. This is still her home.”

While later on in the video, another fans asked if the kitchen appliances still worked.

Angie said: “Yes the kitchen appliances do work. They’re turned off for fire safety, but they do still work.

“And when Lisa Marie and her family are here we fire then up and sometimes they’ll have dinner here in the mansion.”

It’s Lisa Marie’s requirement that Graceland’s upstairs be preserved as Elvis left it.

The archivist said: “It looks as if he just got up and left.

“It is part of my job to maintain it. So we do go up there to maintain the space.

“The record on the record player is the last record he listened to. There’s a styrofoam cup that sits on a bookshelf.”
