How Dior Became One Of The Biggest Fashion Houses In The World

Dior is known as a modern fashion giant with a vibrant history. Still, it has an endless blueprint in its design, progressive expansion, and always continuing to innovate things.

Christian Dior’s Beloved Brainchild

The multinational luxury fashion house was founded by Christian Dior, born to wealth and comfort in January 1905, in a seaside town on the coast of Normandy, France. He was a son of a wealthy fertilizer manufacturer and the second of five siblings. In 1910 the family moved to Paris, where Christian grew up and lived a turbulent life. Christian had a deep interest in art. Before he went into fashion, he ran an art gallery in France. In 1929, the Dior family suffered financially during the great depression, which Christian forced to close his art gallery for good. During the unfortunate crash of the year, he worked with fashion designer Robert Piguet and former couturier Lucien Lelong. Dior initially sold his sketches to haute couture houses to earn some money for a start.

In 1940, in the early stage of his fashion career, it halted due to the start of the second World War, and Christian was called up to serve in the military army as an officer. In preparing for Christian Dior to run his line in fashion, not too long after working with his mentors, he shortly created his own fashion house in 1946, and Christian Dior was born.

Revolutionizing The World Of Fashion

Dior was already renowned as an international brand since its publication in 1946. The French fashion house was publicly praised for the brand’s elegance and timeless femininity. As the war ended, Dior brought up his collections and coined The New Look to showcase the end of World War II. Dior’s extraordinary and creative designs were revolutionary back then, making the brand’s name recognizable on the fashion map and becoming one of the most sought and adored trends. On the 12th of February 1947, Dior launched their first collection.

From Rita Hayworth to Margot Fonteyn, prominent stars and high-profile women flocked and donned his clothes in this New Look affair. Dior snowballed and embedded a mark as one of the most iconic fashion brands in history.

From Paris to New York

Dior’s rich history started in the aftermath of the second world war. Christian Dior aimed for a new and unique fashion style to catch the public’s eye. Dior went global by opening a store on Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in New York City in 1948. It comes with a worldwide launch and an expanded brand collection, including fragrances that he dedicated to his sister. Dior continued to promote his New Look, which helped his new environment to experience his pocketful of fashion experience.

In showcasing his new era of fashion style, he didn’t do it all by himself. With a young nineteen-year-old, Yves Saint Laurent started working with Christian Dior as his assistant. In 1955, Christian Dior saw potential in Saint Laurent and even planned to choose him to succeed him when the time came because of Saint Laurent’s talent and eye for fashion. A couple of years passed, and Christian Dior got into a massive heart attack, leading to his demise, and the fashion world grieved the loss of the iconic French fashion designer. Yves Saint Laurent carried on Christian Dior’s legacy at twenty-one, keeping Dior’s original vision at heart. Saint Laurent slightly constructed some of its sharp designs into a softer silhouette and re-designed the cinched waist to reveal the brand’s structure. Not too long when Saint Laurent was called to serve the army in 1960 and released from the industry.

After Yves Saint Laurent’s departure, impressive and creative leaders took over. Marc Bohan took his place and made the label’s design and concept aligned with Christian Dior’s classic vision. In 1978, Christian Dior was purchased by Bernard Arnault, a billionaire behind LVMH Moet Hennesey, and took charge of Dior as a managing chairman and CEO. Despite being under LVMH, Dior continues to be a stand-alone brand. In 1989, a strong arm of the brand, Dior Haute Couture, was founded by its newly hired stylistic director Gianfranco Ferre, infusing his creative vision with a more refined look than the brand had before. In commemorating Dior’s fashion history and creations, for the first time in public display, they built a 22,000-square-foot show titled Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams, featuring Dior’s massive designs throughout history. The show features garments by Dior and his successors from Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferre, John Galliano, Raf Simons, and its current artistic director Maria Grazia Chiuri.
