How to celebrate Father's Day on a budget

Father’s Day is right around the corner.

If it’s a day that you celebrate, you might feel like you need to spend a lot of money on the father-figure in your life.

Of course, it goes without saying that a handmade card and a cuppa or two is plenty enough to show your thanks and love, or even just spending time with a loved one can be priceless.

But we know how much these events can be inflated, and the temptation is there to go all out and blow the budget.

As always, we’ve got your back.

Ahead, we share some top tips for celebrating your loved ones without breaking the bank.

Breakfast in bed is a classic for a reason

If you have young children, then a lie-in is probably top of most people’s lists.

So, why not treat them to a nice long snooze past their usual wake-up time, followed by breakfast of their choice in bed.

If your children are slightly older, get them involved by taking the breakfast order and helping to make it before serving it with a cuddle on the side.

Go on a cheap day out

Experiences over things – that’s key. Days out can add up but there are lots of free or inexpensive things you can do to have a fun day.

Strawberry picking is an annual tradition for us, and it makes for an inexpensive trip out that is lots of fun. Check your local pick-your-own farms where you can go along and stock up on some freshly picked fruits.

If the budget allows, pop into a pub garden afterwards for a refreshment in the garden.

Remember time is valuable

If you want to make Father’s Day special, the best thing you can do is give your dad your time.

Perhaps take them out for the day and do something you never normally have time to do, like going fishing or playing golf.

Try an activity course

To keep kids occupied on the day, set up an activity or assault course in the garden. You can even include some obstacles for the grownups to take part in.

Make it a competition to keep everyone entertained for zero cost.

Crack out any garden games you have, like skittles and boules, too, for a proper family sports day.

Head to the beach

A trip to the beach is a firm favourite in our family. Just pack up a flask of coffee, a picnic and some buckets spades or crabbing nets, and you’ve got a full day of fun together.

Get your game on

Lots of large arcades will do a ‘play as much as you can’ set price, which will mean you don’t have to keep saying no to little ones for ‘one more game’ and you can have lots of fun together.

Don’t overspend on gifts

Presents needn’t break the bank either, if you choose to do them. Books make a great present but shop savvy here – often second-hand books have been read once, are in perfect condition and can be bought for a fraction of the price.

Other affordable present ideas include a framed copy of his favourite comic book, a coffee voucher, or a delivery of some delicious cookies or cupcakes.

Make it personal

Many online photobook websites allow you to print directly from your phone. This can make for a lovely Father’s Day gift: pictures of your year together, all of the little memories you’ve enjoyed during this past year, put together in a book to cherish.

Take on the chores

If you really want to do something thoughtful, take on a chore that he’s been dreading the most, like clearing out the garage or the loft, and surprise him when you’re done.

Have a fakeaway night

So many takeaways can be easily replicated yourself at home, and in half the time!

Why not make your own pizzas and get the children involved, too, then settle down for a movie night with popcorn and his favourite drinks?
