Lad I met online does not want to Zoom but does want to meet in real life

DEAR DEIDRE: I SPEND hours every evening chatting to this boy I’ve met online.

I am 15 and he is 17. We have been talking for four months. We are into the same bands and get on really well but I only know him from photos.

He says his signal isn’t good enough for us to FaceTime or Zoom.

He keeps asking me to meet him in my nearest town.

I’d like to but I’m not sure it’s safe. What should I do?

DEIDRE SAYS: I worry that he has avoided FaceTiming or using Zoom with you. Those photos he’s shown you could be of anyone.

He may be a lot older than 17 and pretending to be into the same bands to groom you.

Tell him the only way you can meet is if your mum – or someone else responsible – comes with you to the first get-together.

They would then sit out of earshot but within eyesight.

If he’s genuine, he will understand. My e-leaflet Staying Safe Online explains more.
