Michail Antonio wins Premier League Player of the Month… and now has more awards than Drogba, Cole and Vieira

MICHAIL ANTONIO has been named as the Premier League Player of the Month – and now has more awards than Didier Drogba and Patrick Vieira.

The West Ham star, 30, enjoyed a superb July, with eight goals and one assist as his side avoided relegation.

Antonio scored all four in the win over Norwich, while also finding the net against Chelsea, Newcastle, Watford and Manchester United.

Incredibly, Antonio's win puts him ahead of some all-time Premier League greats like Ashley Cole who NEVER won the monthly award.

We take a look at nine of the biggest names to have been snubbed since the award's inception…

DIDIER DROGBA

CHELSEA legend Drogba played 309 times in the Premier League, scoring 124 goals while adding 64 assists.

He even won the title FOUR times, including Two Golden Boots.

And yet Drogba, bizarrely, was never awarded a single Player of the Month award.

PETER SCHMEICHEL

THE Manchester United icon kept 128 clean sheets in his 310 Premier League games.

Schmeichel won the title FIVE times and even won the Player of the Season award in 1995-96.

Despite being named the best player in the Premier League that season, he still never earned a monthly accolade…

SOL CAMPBELL

AN Arsenal and Tottenham star during his career, Campbell played over 500 Premier League matches, winning the league twice.

Despite helping to keep 154 clean sheets, the ex-England star was never named Player of the Month.

ASHLEY COLE

COLE spent all 15 years of his Premier League career at Arsenal and Chelsea – winning the title three times, including once with the 2003-04 Invincibles.

Despite making nearly 400 Premier League appearances and being the best left-back at the planet for many years, he was still perennially overlooked for the award.

CLAUDE MAKELELE

THE Chelsea legend was so good, a position was actually named after him – "The Claude Makelele Role".

In five season, Makelele won the league twice and utterly redefined the role of the defensive midfielder, paving the way for the likes of N'Golo Kante in years to come.

PATRICK VIEIRA

THE Gunners legend won the Premier League three times – including with Arsenal's Invincibles.

Vieira also won the 2000-01 Player of the Season award – and yet still didn't win a monthly accolade.

Vieira scored over 30 goals and added more than 30 assists in 307 PL matches.

XABI ALONSO

IN a Liverpool midfield which included Steven Gerrard and Javier Mascherano, it's impressive that Alonso was often the standout star.

The Reds sorely missed the Spaniard when he left for Real Madrid after five seasons before later joining Bayern Munich.

His club history points to how talented a player he was more than his stats ever could.

GARY NEVILLE

AN eight-time champion and a veteran of 400 Premier League games.

It's barely believable the former Man Utd right-back never won a Player of the Month award.

JAMIE CARRAGHER

WITH over 500 Premier League games and nearly 200 clean sheets to his name, it's bonkers to think Carragher never won a Player of the Month award.

Carra was part of arguably the second-best Premier League defence inLiverpool's history, alongside Sami Hyypia, Stephane Henchoz and John Arne Riise.

Only the 2019-20 title-winning back-four can beat that…
