Gardeners’ World presenter Monty Don shared a photo on Instagram yesterday of his box hedges. The gardening expert, who has over 847,000 followers on the social media platform, shared a video earlier in the year when his box hedging was “ravaged” by a disease called Box blight. The 65-year-old’s beautiful garden at his Tudor farmhouse in Herefordshire looked uncharacteristically gloomy earlier in the year after he was forced to remove the box hedging.

Now, the remaining hedging looks lush, green and healthy.

Monty captioned the photo: “Our remaining unblighted box hedges.”

The post was inundated with support from fans who said the hedges were looking “fantastic”.

One user said: “They are looking fantastic I love the shape of them.”

Another user commented: “Wow that box looks spectacular, so flat, like a table top.”

Another user said: “So green in the sunshine – long may they remain.”

Another user simply said: “They look beautiful.”

Box blight is a disease which specifically affects boxwood and other varieties of plants.

The disease is caused by two different types of fungi attacking the leaves and stems of the plant.

The main symptoms of box blight are brown leave and bare patches in your hedge.

You can get it all year round but it’s mainly active in the rainier seasons.

The Royal Horticultural Society website said using fungicides is unlikely to be effective against box blight.

One of the ways to manage an outbreak is to simply dig up and destroy any plants that are infected by it.

This is what Monty did earlier in the year to control the spread of the disease.

Monty wrote at the time: “There was a time when our box hedging was one of the best things about the garden – especially in winter.

“But Box blight has ravaged it and we have removed a lot already.”

He added: “In a week or two it will be grubbed up from the Jewel Garden and burnt.

“Sad – but nothing stays the same. Time for a change.”

Monty also shared a photo today of his dog Patti who had been caught in the rain.

He said: “Patti does not share my enthusiasm for today’s lovely rain!”

Gardeners’ World airs on Friday at 9pm on BBC Two.
