My wife gets drunk every day and won’t stop despite being diagnosed with cancer – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: MY wife gets drunk seven days a week. I would leave but she has been diagnosed with cancer.

I am 56 and she is 53. She’s always liked a drink but it has got much worse these past few years.

She gets heavily intoxicated and is alcohol-dependent.

I love her but am no longer in love with her.

I was going to leave her but then she discovered she has bowel cancer.

She has had surgery plus chemo and radiotherapy. You would think this would be a wake-up call but she is ignoring the medical advice and drinking more than ever.

That leads to terrible rows – not just with me but with her family and our two daughters.

I would so like to get out but I don’t feel strong enough to go.

DEIDRE SAYS: This is a tragic situation.

Your wife’s drinking is making everyone so unhappy – herself included.

Have you asked her – when she is sober – what she believes lies behind her alcohol problem?

What is she running away from?

You can’t give up drinking on her behalf but you and your daughters can find understanding support to help you cope through Al-Anon, which helps partners and families of people with a drinking problem (see al-anonuk.org.uk or call 0800 0086 811).
