Virgin Media customers set to enjoy a colossal speed upgrade without paying a penny extra
Virgin Media could be planning a drastic upgrade to its fibre broadband plan – bringing faster speeds to households across the UK, according to the latest whispers. Virgin Media is keeping shtum about these rumours, but sources suggest the Internet Service Provider (ISP) will boost its 500Mbps plan to 600Mbps.
Best of all? The increase of 100Mbps – for context, that rise is almost double the average UK household broadband speed of 64Mbps – will be completely free to those subscribed to the Ultimate Oomph bundle, which includes fibre broadband, the all-singing all-dancing Virgin Media TV V6 set-top box with Sky Sports HD, Sky Cinema and 260 channels, a SIM-only plan and free phone calls to UK landlines and mobiles.
Not only that, but Virgin Media could also be planning to unleash its 500Mbps speeds as a broadband-only package. As it stands, these eye-watering downloads are limited to the Ultimate Oomph bundle. Fibre broadband-only packages currently top-out at 350Mbps. These do not even require a landline.

The speed boosts will work with the existing Virgin Media Hub 3.0 router hardware. However, Virgin has already unveiled its Hub 4.0 – which comes as standard for its 1,000Mbps broadband plan, known as Gig1. The new router is Virgin Media’s fastest to date and features improved WiFi hardware to provide speedy and reliable connectivity throughout your home.

The Hub 4 boasts more antennae than its predecessor, the Hub 3, meaning it can manage multiple devices at the same time around the home which can all share the hyperfast speed. So, if you’ve got plenty of connected home gadgets – from smart doorbells, security cameras, always-listening smart speakers from Google or Amazon and more – these should all get a strong connection throughout peak times.
The rumoured free speed boost – from 500Mbps to 600Mbps – and the arrival of the 500Mbps speeds for broadband-only customers could launch next month, according to sources speaking to ISPreview. Virgin Media has not commented on the rumoured plans for the speed boost across the UK.
