Woman gives birth on motorway, helped by delivery driver husband
A woman has shared the shocking moment she gave birth on the side of a motorway – after her husband refused to call an ambulance until he saw the baby’s head.
Gayla Thompson, 29, from Tennessee, US, was in labour for two days without realising it before her contractions amped up a notch this Wednesday.
Along with her delivery driver husband Ryan, 30, the pair dropped off their son Conor, five, and headed to the hospital.
Although the drive should have only taken 20 minutes, halfway there Gayla was in full labour.
‘I was in way too much pain to yell at Ryan, so calmly told him over and over to speed and drive in the medium lanes with our warning lights on or call 911,’ Gayla, who works as a photographer, told Jam Press.
‘He didn’t think I was in actual labour so he refused. He didn’t want to call 911 because he thought we would make it and it would be a waste of their time.
‘I was screaming during every contraction and then all of a sudden was in too much pain to scream, and was completely silent – that was my body’s sign that baby was actually coming right then and there.’
Ryan delivered the baby on the side of the I-440 interstate, only pulling over and calling for an ambulance when the baby’s head was ‘all the way out’.
Gayla said: ‘We were super worried at first because his head was stuck for a solid two minutes before my next push.
‘There was no crying – just a purple/blue baby hanging out for two whole minutes.’
Then when the baby did arrive, the couple realised the cord was wrapped around his neck.
Ryan had to carefully remove the umbilical cord before the ambulance arrived 10 minutes later and transported them to Vanderbilt Hospital, where the mum delivered her placenta.
Although she lost a lot of blood during the delivery, both Gayla and the baby boy they named Carson got a clean bill of health.
She has since shared her ‘crazy’ story on Facebook, where the post has received more than 1,300 likes so far.
One person commented: ‘So, so cool and terrifying at the same time. Way to go momma.’
‘That’s going to be a funny story if you get your car professionally cleaned,’ said another.
And, as many others pointed out, Ryan has another string to add to his bow of delivery credentials.
