Coleen Rooney or Rebekah Vardy could be hit with a £2million legal bill if they lose Wagatha Christie case
COLEEN Rooney or Becky Vardy could be hit with a legal bill of more than £2million after their explosive ‘Wagatha Christie’ court case, it has emerged.
The loser of the High Court libel case faces being saddled with a legal bill of more than £1.6 million, according to cost assessments drawn up by the two sides.
Damages awarded by the judge on top could then push the total cost to the losing Wag to more than £2million.
The two sides have drawn up an estimate of their costs ahead of a private “budget and timetable” hearing on Tuesday.
The projected costs – submitted to the court – reflect work carried out by legal teams plus the number of witnesses called.
Becky Vardy’s lawyers have run up a bill of £400,000 already – and estimate their costs at the end of a trial could hit £1.1m.
Coleen’s camp have assessed their costs at just over £500,000 in total, with around £200,000 incurred already.
The loser in the high-stakes battle – sparked by Coleen’s infamous October 2019 social media post claiming stories were leaked from Becky’s Instagram account – is likely to have to meet the other side’s cost as well as their own.
A source said yesterday: “These figures are eye-watering, and there’s a chance they could go even higher.
“They illustrate what a high-stakes battle this is.
“Neither side wants to back down, and they both know what is on the line for both of them.”
A High Court battle is looming after mediation talks between Becky, 39, and Coleen, 34, failed last month.
And we told three weeks ago how the case might not be heard until next year, due to Covid backlogs in the legal system.
The two Wags, who are former friends, are deadlocked because neither side wants to admit guilt or apologise.
Mum of five Becky – wed to Leicester ace Jamie Vardy, 34 – denies leaking stories and wants Coleen to admit her accusation was wrong and delete her social media posts.
Derby Boss Wayne Rooney’s wife, Coleen, offered a peace deal which would have seen both women donate to charity and walk away on an “agree to disagree” basis.
Ex Dancing on Ice star Becky, who was pregnant when the row blew up, is suing Coleen for libel over the explosive accusation.
Sources have said Mum of four Coleen finds the amount spent on the case “grotesque” in light of the Covid pandemic.
But she is said be “supremely confident” about her case as the High Court showdown approaches.
Coleen’s side lost an intermediary 'meanings hearing' in November.
At that round of the case, the dispute was over the wording of Coleen's social media post.
Coleen said leaks came from “Rebekah Vardy's account” – and her lawyers argued that she had said Becky herself was guilty.
But Judge Mark Warby ruled that Coleen's post “clearly identified” Becky as being “guilty of the serious and consistent breach of trust”.
Coleen’s social media post which sparked the showdown told how she had planted false stories and restricted access so only one follower could see them.
She then dramatically revealed: “It’s Rebekah Vardy’s account.”
After the post went viral, Becky furiously denied being behind leaks.
Representatives for both women did not comment.
