Coronation Street stars pay tribute to soap on its 60th anniversary

Coronation Street stars both past and present have paid tribute to the soap on the day of its 60th anniversary.

The ITV soap began on this very day six decades ago.

In order to mark the occasion, several of the serial drama’s cast members have taken to social media to congratulate the national institution on 60th thrilling years of telly.

Sally Ann Matthews — who portrays Jenny Connor — said: ‘Happy 60th birthday Corrie. What would my life have been like without you? Today I’m thinking about everyone who has played a part in the show.

‘Friends who are no longer with us, my work family I won’t be able to hug today, colleagues we haven’t seen for months – love you all! x’

Imran Habeeb actor Charlie de Melo marked the occasion with a snap of his first ever day on the cobbles, as he wrote: ‘Happy 60th @itvcorrie . This was taken the first time I ever set foot on the cobbles.

‘I was so thrilled&terrified I just had to document the moment.I was stepping into&becoming (a small) part of a cornerstone of British culture..and I couldnt be prouder Here’s to the next 60.’

Ian Bartholomew (Geoff Metcalfe) also posted a warm message for the serial drama’s 60th, saying: ‘Happy 60th Birthday to Coronation Street. And may there be many happy returns.’

Rob Mallard — aka Daniel Osborne — marked the occasion with ‘Happy 60th Corrie!’

Previous cast members also congraulated Corrie on reaching a milestone six as the 60th, with Shobna Gulati (Sunita Alahan) taking a little trip down memory lane: ‘Life and love THANK-YOU #Corrie Sunita corner shop assistant to barmaid – single , love triangle ,brain tumour ,kidnapped, burning shop, married , jailed , buried in rubble tram crash, pregnant/twins ,separated , re kindled ,adulteress, burning Rovers return , murdered.THE END.’

Meanwhile, Robert Preston star Tristan Gemmill said: ‘Happy 60th Birthday @itvcorrie !! Huge love and congratulations to the whole #Corrie family – old, new and in between.’

A very special week of hour-long episodes were filmed to mark the 60th anniversary, and tonight sees the soap air its official anniversary instalment.
