EastEnders’ Shane Richie takes swipe at Corrie fans ahead of I’m A Celeb trial

EastEnders legend Shane Richie jokingly blamed Coronation Street fans for voting for him to do the latest trial on I'm A Celebrity.. Get Me Out of Here! during Monday's episode.

The 56-year-old actor and Radio 1 DJ Jordan North, 30, discovered that the public had picked them to take on Viper Vault on Sunday's show.

As the pair joined hosts Ant McPartlin and Dec Donnelly at the trial area, Ant asked both contestants why they thought they'd been voted to do the trial by viewers at home.

Shane cheekily joked: "I've got a big family in Ireland, they'll have emptied the account and I think Coronation Street fans."

Viewers at home rushed to their keyboards to discuss Shane's subtle swipe at the ITV rival soap.

Taking to Twitter, one fan penned: "Coronation street fans hahahahah Shane you legend."

Another added: "Shane 'Coronation Street fans' I CANNOT COPE WITH HIM, absolutely love him."

A third person posted: "Yeah I voted for Shane and I'm a Coronation Street fan."

Shane is best known for playing Alfie Moon in the BBC One soap between 2002 and 2005, then 2010 until 2016 and then in its spin-off drama Redwater in 2017.

He returned to EastEnders in 2018 for another stint until 2019.

Soap star Shane made a dramatic entrance to the castle after he fell out of a hammock just shortly after his arrival.

After going into the camp at Gwrych Castle in North Wales, the actor went to recline in the bright-red hammock as the campmates inspected their sleeping quarters.

However, he appeared to get in too enthusiastically as he was flipped out onto the ground.

Speaking about his decision to sign up to the 20th series of I'm A Celebrity, Shane said: "We got the call in January and I agreed to do it because it was the 20th one.

"My kids were old enough to travel to Australia and they wanted to meet Ant and Dec. We were all really excited.

"We were going to fit it around my other work as I was going on tour, doing a TV series and panto – but that all got cancelled in March.

"And now I am literally skint. You save money for a rainy day but you don't expect the rainy day to last six months.

"Thankfully I've been able to borrow money from mates, my family and the bank and my wife is now very happy we can finally pay off the credit card!"
