EastEnders viewers praise Kathy Beale after iconic Sharongate episode
EastEnders viewers hailed Kathy Mitchell as a ‘Queen’ after BBC revisited the iconic Sharongate episode.
Soap fans took a trip back to the 90s on Tuesday night – and we relived the drama (and that iconic slap) all over again.
It was like it happened yesterday.
With pre-lockdown instalments having come to an end on June 16, the BBC One soap was forced to go off the air for the first time in its history.
However, in an effort to ensure viewers get a trip to Albert Square, an iconic episode will air each and every Tuesday.
The episode — which is quite possibly the most well-known out of the 6,124 that have aired thus far — was originally broadcast back in 1994, and saw Sharon’s (Letitia Dean) steamy affair with Phil (Steve McFadden) made public in the Queen Vic for the whole Square to hear.
The evening on which Grant (Ross Kemp) chose to reveal such information was none other than Phil and Kathy’s (Gillian Taylforth) engagement party.
Taking to Twitter after that iconic slap, viewers praised Kathy, who was played by Gillian Taylforth, for her ‘bad-ass’ performance.
One fan tweeted: ‘Classic Kathy is SAVAGE!!!’
Another commented: ‘THE Kathy Beale AND Sharon Watts… I just… icons.’
‘So we once had a badass Kathy but now we have a full-time maid to Ian Beale Kathy?’ one added.
Another exclaimed: ‘Kathy absolutely bossing it!’
EastEnders returns on Tuesday on BBC One.
