Amy Walsh has admitted that her boyfriend Toby Alexander-Smith has been subjected to online trolling because of the character he portrays on EastEnders.

In the popular soap, the 31 year old takes on the role of Gray Atkins, who domestically abused his wife Chantelle Atkins, played by Jessica Plummer, before horrifically killing her.

And in a new interview on Wednesday's episode of Loose Women, Emmerdale star Amy, who began dating Toby last year, explained that people online had a tough time separating him from the hated, fictional television character.

"He's been quite lucky, but you do get a bit. It's more online than anything else," Amy explained when asked if he was treated poorly by members of the public because of his acting gig.

Amy explained: "But I just always say it's because you're so good, you're doing a good job, and that's all that matters.

"His storyline was such an important one to get people talking and raise awareness, so as long as he's doing that, his work here is done," she added.

In a previous interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Toby explained that it was tough playing the role as he is nothing like Gray in real life.

"I think initially it took a while to get used to that, that it's not a personal thing about me.

'It gets difficult when it becomes personal because people sometimes can't differentiate between the character and me as an actor, but that's fine.

"If one person gets out of an abusive relationship, then it's worth it. I'll take it all day long."

Amy and Toby reportedly met through mutual friends last year.

The couple made their first public appearance on the red carpet at A Christmas Carol in London last year.

At the time, an insider told The Sun: "It's early days, but they really like each other. They're both very busy with packed work schedules at opposite ends of the country, but they try to spend as much time together as they can."
