Jason Manford to be locked in the Rovers in Corrie 60th anniversary event
Coronation Street celebrates its 60th anniversary next week with a series of explosive episodes that will change the cobbles forever.
To mark the milestone, the ITV soap has also joined forces with Twitter to launch Race to the Rovers, which is a live online event that will ultimately bring fans, cast, and digital crew together in celebration.
The Corrie digital team essentially ‘lock’ their Mancunian neighbour, Jason Manford in iconic pub the Rovers Return!
Cast members Mikey North (Gary Windass), Julia Goulding (Shona Platt), Ryan Russell (Michael Bailey) and Mollie Gallagher (Nina Lucas) will then be given a mere 60 minutes to set him free!
To rescue Jason, each actor will have to complete a series of mental and physical games — that is, before his bar tab runs out! Guest Rover’s Roving Reporter Ben Shires will also be on site to host the hunt and make sure all’s fair.
Using a dynamic graphic overlay, the Corrie team will allow fans to help or hinder each cast member’s progress by using specially-created hashtags #CorrieHelp #CorreHinder. Audience members will also see a selection of their tweets sent directly to hosts and cast as they play along.
Claire Hoang, ITV’s Digital Executive Producer said: ‘We’re so excited to involve the audience in such a fun and exciting way to digitally celebrate 60 years of Corrie. We wanted to do something a bit different and this kind of ground-breaking digital project shows that we’re constantly trying to push what we can do on the cobbles.
‘We’re incredibly proud to work with the Twitter LAB team, GUUD and Escape Game Design to create this unique experience for our fans – and we’re sure having Jason being rescued by Mikey, Julia, Ryan and Mollie will be as dramatic as everything else we’ve seen on the street over the years!’
Alice Beverton-Palmer, Entertainment Partnerships Manager, Twitter said, ‘It’s great to see one of the UK’s most venerable TV shows is celebrating its 60th anniversary at the cutting edge of Twitter.
‘This live streamed interactive escape room is an innovative use of our service and will get fans joining in the fun alongside their favourite Corrie stars.’
Join in on the fun on Twitter at 2pm on Sunday December 6 @itvcorrie.
