Johnny Depp stars in Jeanne Du Barry trailer – Pirates stars comeback
Johnny Depp stars in trailer for French film Jeanne du Barry
Having won his libel case in the US against ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp is now making his Hollywood comeback. After previously being dropped from Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and Fantastic Beasts 3 by Disney and Warner Bros, the 59-year-old’s last movie was 2020’s Minamata. But now the Jack Sparrow star has teamed up with actress and filmmaker Maïwenn to co-star with her in Jeanne du Barry, which will open the Cannes Film Festival on May 16.
Depp stars in the 18th century romance as the controversial King Louis XV opposite Maïwenn’s courtesan, who he falls madly in love with – scandalising the court at Versailles. Jeanne du Barry is a French-language movie that includes the American actor speaking in the Parisian dialect. The monarch he plays reigned over Frances from 1715-1774, which interestingly covers the same time period as the setting of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
King Louis XV “The Beloved” succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV (the longest-reigning monarch in history) at the age of five. The latter’s reign is criticised by historians for his corruption and wars that drained the French treasury for little gain.
Louis XV was succeeded by his grandson, Louis XVI, the last King of France, who was executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. Jeanne Du Barry is produced by the Paris-based Why Not Productions with Depp’s IN.2 company and France Télévision.
Jeanne Du Barry arrives in French cinemas at the same time as the Cannes premiere on May 16 and a UK release date is TBC.
