Conceived by Emmy-winning director and choreographer Kenny Ortega, Julie and the Phantoms follows a teenager dealing with the loss of her mother.

High school student Julie (played by Madison Reyes) is struggling to cope with life following the death of her mother Rose the year before.

Julie, who is passionate about music and incredibly talented, has lost her love for it due to her grief.

However, when three ghosts from 1995 – Luke (Charlie Gillespie), Reggie (Jeremy Shada) and Alex (Owen Patrick Joyner) – appear in her mother’s music studio, Julie’s passion for music is reignited.

The three spirits were part of a group called Sunset Curve from the 90s before their unfortunate and mysterious demise.

With their help, she starts writing music again and performing before she decides to form a group called Julie and the Phantoms.

The feelgood show will chart the ups and downs of adolescence, loss and following one’s dreams.

Viewers will also have a strong soundtrack to match the story, which is likely to be a sweet antidote to any lockdown blues.

Other cast members include Carlos Ponce as Ray, Sonny Bustamante as Carlos, Jadah Marie as Flynn and Sacha Carlson as Nick.

There will also be some guest appearance from Cheyenne Jackson, Booboo Stewart and Alison Araya.

The producers behind Julie and the Phantoms scoured across the world to find the right actress to play their lead.

Rising star Reyes was selected from 700 others to take on the role, which marks her first professional acting job.

Reyes knew she wanted to act from a young age after taking on the role Princess Jasmine in a school production of Aladdin.

She was encouraged by a teacher to make an audition tape for Julie and the Phantoms.

As part of her audition, she performed all the parts in the script as well as playing the piano and singing the track She Used to Be Mine from the musical Waitress.

The main cast were chosen not only based on their acting abilities but also their musical skills with all of them able to play instruments and sing live – both for their auditions and while filming.

The show was filmed in Vancouver, Canada and prior to the shoot, the main four cast members had to attend a boot camp in preparation.

The month-long boot camp saw they all undergoing intense training in singing, dancing and acting as well as additional work on their instrumental skills.

Reyes and Gillespie also attended lessons in Salsa, Ballroom and Swing to help them with their footwork for the show.
