Tony DiNozzo (played by Michael Weatherly) hasn’t appeared on NCIS since he left the team to spend more time with his daughter at the end of season 13. However, with yet another spin-off set in the North Pacific heading to CBS, some viewers are convinced this could be the perfect way to bring the agent back into the fold.
NCIS fans have speculated Tony DiNozzo could play a major part in the upcoming spin-off set in Hawaii.
The franchise’s third offshoot was announced on February 18, just days before fellow spin-off NCIS: New Orleans was cancelled.
As the series continues to expand, many viewers are hoping NCIS will continue to bring back old favourites after Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) was brought back in the flagship’s 17th season.
Agent DiNozzo has been a pivotal member of the NCIS team alongside Ziva and team leader Leroy Gibbs (Mark Harmon) since they were first introduced in the original series, JAG.
It was then announced that NCIS’s 13th season would be DiNozzo’s last, and he subsequently left the team when he discovered he had a daughter with the then presumed dead Ziva David.
However, following Ziva’s unexpected return in 2019, fans are optimistic that more old favourites could eventually make their way back for the series.
Tony DiNozzo has always wanted to head his own team, but sadly didn’t have the chance to take over Gibbs’ mantle, or form a crew of his own in another city, before his exit.
Weatherly now leads CBS’s legal drama Bull, which is currently in its fifth season.
Even so, there’s still a chance the TV star could return to NCIS, as it is unknown if Bull will be renewed for a sixth instalment.
Following the announcement of another NCIS spin-off, hopeful viewers took to social media to express their support for DiNozzo’s return.
On Twitter, one fan wrote: “Michael Weatherly is talking further #Tiva adventures.”
“If Bull gets cancelled let’s have this very special agent head his own team on the new NCIS Hawaii.”

“We could find out he’s been working for them for years in a different capacity when in Paris.”
Now Ziva is confirmed to be alive and well, the NCIS fanbase has its fingers crossed she’ll be back to reunite with her old flame Tony DiNozzo in future seasons.
While they may not be returning to CBS’s mainline NCIS series, a new spin-off could be the perfect entry point to reintroduce the fan favourite couple, dubbed ‘Tiva’ by die-hard viewers.
Meanwhile, other fans have admitted to losing interest in NCIS after the departure of some of the core cast over the years.
DiNozzo’s exit was also followed by Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) stepping down in 2015, while newcomer Maria Bello is set to leave later this year.
Also on Twitter, another fan said: “I always wanted Tony to have the Hawaii spin-off. My love of NCIS waned after DiNozzo left!”
CBS have yet to confirm the new cast, although the NCIS franchise always attracts big names and exciting breakouts so fans are keeping their eyes peeled for future announcements.
NCIS season 18 continues Tuesday, March 2 on CBS.
