O Holy Fright! 5 Killer Christmas Movies For Horror Lovers

The weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day are often called “the most wonderful time of the year.” TV lovers can count on networks and studios to deliver shows and movies that give viewers the warm-and-fuzzies. But for entertainment buffs that prefer a little horror during the holidays, stream these five scary Christmas movies that will turn your “O Holy Night” into an “O Holy Fright!”

‘Black Christmas’ (2019)

With hits such as Get out, the Paranormal Activity series, and the Insidious series in its rearview, Blumhouse is the studio fans can count on for thrills and chills. And true to form, the production house dropped a Black Christmas movie reboot that does not disappoint.

In the film, a group of sorority sisters is stalked by a murderous villain. But there is more to the story than meets the eye because this slasher flick revival adds a supernatural twist to the plot. Murder, mayhem, and matriculation make Black Christmas a must-watch horror movie this holiday.

‘Anna and the Apocalypse’ (2017)

“Oh no! Justin Bieber’s a zombie,” dishes a character from Anna and the Apocalypse after reading the news. The trailer for the film touts “a zombie Christmas musical.” And this horror-comedy hits all the right notes with singing, dancing, and hilarious pop culture references.

With civilization crumbling, Anna and her crew search for their loved ones and fight for survival. It’s anyone’s guess who will live, who will die, and who will shine in the final dance number. But what is certain is that Anna and the Apocalypse is a fun ride with horror, humor, and holiday spirit.

Better Watch Out (2017)

The trailer for Better Watch Out aptly describes the film as “Home Alone meets The Strangers.” The teen-led comedy-thriller is a home invasion themed movie with a sadistic twist. But in the interest of avoiding spoilers, we will gloss over the gory details.

What we can say is that fans and critics have given Better Watch Out high marks, according to the movie’s Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And as a bonus, horror movie icon Virginia Madsen of the Candyman franchise makes an appearance, which in itself is worth the price of admission.

‘Krampus’ (2015)

“His name is Krampus. He and his helpers did not come to give, but to take,” explains the wise elder in Krampus. In this film, a family is stalked and terrorized by a supernatural entity described as Santa’s shadow. And we soon learn that one of the victims is responsible for summoning the demon in the first place.

Although the movie takes a dark turn, it is filled with some moments that are likely to make viewers laugh and scream at the same time. Krampus is a delicious combination of fantasy, horror, and comedy with a dose of action thrown in for good measure.

‘Gremlins’ (1984)

From the opening credits featuring Darlene Love’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” to the snow-covered backdrop, Gremlins is a true Christmas classic.

The movie begins with a father gifting a mogwai — a rare pet — named Gizmo to his son. According to the shop owner who sold him, the furball requires a low-light, dry environment and must always be fed before midnight. Of course, the family proves too irresponsible to properly care for the creature, so chaos and hilarity quickly ensue. When Gizmo is doused with water, he multiplies into more mogwais. But the furry copies of the docile pet soon reveal their true nature. Spoiler alert — they’re super evil.
