Our Girl season 4: Where is Captain James? Why did Ben Aldridge quit series?

Our Girl returns to BBC One tonight (April 7) with the third episode of season four. However, one familiar face will not be back on screens – here’s everything you need to know about why Captain James star Ben Aldridge left the hit series, as well as whether the fate of his character has been revealed.

Where is Captain James in Our Girl?

Fans of Our Girl will know Captain James (played by Ben Aldridge) has played a huge part in the series since it started in 2014.

Starring alongside Lacey Turner as Molly Dawes, he was a part of the major love story of the first season.

He then went on to appear alongside Georgie Lane (Michelle Keegan) in seasons two and three of the show.

In the last series, the pair even seemed to embark on a romance storyline as well.

Fans last saw Captain James in the season three finale as the gang jumped off a cliff edge from an ambush.

Therefore, now season four has begun airing on the BBC without him in it, fans have been desperate to know where the much-loved character is.

So far in season four there has been no revelations about what happened to him after the season three cliffhanger.

This has left fans desperate for answers, taking to Twitter to voice their dismay.

Fan Stacey Louise wrote: “Anyone else think #OurGirl isn’t the same without Captain James?”

“So annoyed at the new series of #ourgirl where is Captain James? What happened when they jumped off the cliff?,” added Lauren Mclaughlin.

A third named Emily Jane wrote: “Watching Our Girl – are we just pretending Captain James didn’t exist?”

However, it seems actor Ben Aldridge has left the hit series and will not be returning again.

The star confirmed this to Metro back in 2018 when the end of the third season aired.

He told the publication: “I’m not sure where they stand with Our Girl at the moment. I know there were rumblings of it doing another series. I don’t think I could be a part of that.

“I’m doing another job which would make me pretty much unavailable depending on when Our Girl films. But I’m not sure I’d be available to be used.

“I was never in a contract to do another one, none of us were, so I guess it’d be basically who they could get back and, when they decide to do it, who’s available kind of thing.”

Since leaving, Aldridge has gone on to take a starring role in the Pennyworth series as Thomas Wayne and has appeared in the second season of Fleabag.

His exit does leave open the possibility for a return should the show come back for season five.

However, if he does reprise the role, it will not be with Keegan’s Georgie who is leaving after this series.

This is because the actor is leaving the role in order to spend more time in the UK.

So far, her replacement on the popular show has not been confirmed by the BBC.

Our Girl airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on BBC One.
