Outlander season 6 timeline: What year will Outlander season 6 be set in?

Outlander cast tease details of ‘exciting’ season six

Outlander fans will know the series has jumped around in time a lot of the past five seasons thanks to plenty of time-travelling. This has led to multiple storylines across the 18th century and the 20th century happening simultaneously. Now the show is heading into its sixth season, here’s everything we know about when it will be set next.

What year will Outlander season 6 be set in?

Outlander fans have been waiting for season six for over a year now after filming was delayed in the wake of Covid-19.

However, now filming is finally on the horizon as the cast return to Scotland to begin work.

The latest outing will be mainly based on the sixth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s series of books.

Titled A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the novel picks up with Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) while they are living in Fraser’s Ridge.

Last viewers saw of the pair, they were dealing with the growing tensions between the British Crown and revolutionary forces in North Carolina.

This is continued in the next novel, which begins in 1773 and continues through to 1776.

Throughout this period, viewers should expect to see war tensions grow in Fraser’s Ridge.

As history buffs will know, the American Revolutionary War began in 1775 in Massachusetts.

Known also as the American War of Independence, the war went on until 1783 when independence was declared.

Therefore, season six will cover the beginnings of this major event in history.

This is especially important as North Carolina was a key battleground during the war.

Showrunner Ronald Moore spoke to Collider back in 2020 about how this time period will impact the characters.

He said: “The large [thing] that’s still defining where we are is we’re in the new world.

“We’re in the American colonies and the American Revolution is getting closer.

“So that’s a big thing that’s going to be moving front and centre the further we get into season six.”

Will there be time travel in Outlander season 6?

WARNING: This section contains spoilers from Diana Gabaldon’s novels.

Viewers will remember how in season five Brianna Fraser (Sophie Skelton) and Roger MacKenzie (Richard Rankin) tried to travel home to the 1960s.

However, they didn’t get very far and ended up just minutes ahead in the future.

Therefore, some might be curious whether the pair will make it back to the present day or not in the upcoming series.

In Gabaldon’s book A Breath of Snow and Ashes, Brianna and Roger travel to the future through a time portal in 1776.

This happens towards the end of the novel so could become a major plot point in season six.

Of course, there is no guarantee the show will follow this trajectory exactly when adapting the book.

In the past, the show has drawn several major events from future novels so this could be the case once again.

Therefore, it seems viewers will just have to wait and see what happens about this next.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video now.
