'Sex and the City' Reboot Reportedly Adding 6 New Friends to the Lineup

Social media erupted when the Sex and the City reboot news first hit the internet back in January. Fans sparked conversations about Kim Cattrall leaving Samantha behind and whether Mr. Big is done too.

With only small announcements coming down the pipeline about casting and storylines, there hasn’t been too much to go on. Now, it’s being reported that some new ladies will be hanging out with Carrie, Charlotte, and Miranda when the And Just Like That… TV series drops.

‘Sex and the City’ reboot filming in spring 2021

It was previously revealed that production for And Just Like That… would begin in spring with Sarah Jessica Parker on board as an executive producer.

Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon are reprising their roles as Charlotte and Miranda, and it’s said John Corbett could pop in as Carrie’s beloved ex-boyfriend Aidan. WarnerMedia shared that the new iteration of the show would follow the main group of friends into another stage of adulthood.

Per the press release, the series “will follow Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s. The ten-episode, half-hour series is scheduled to begin production in New York late spring.”

‘Sex and the City’ to diversify its cast

Though many fans are upset about Samantha Jones’ absence, it looks like there are plans to round out the cast another way. According to TV Line, the girls will grow their friend group with about six more characters, and three of them will be women of color.

The outlet noted that HBO boss Casey Bloys stated showrunner Michael Patrick King and Parker wanted to ensure the show is inclusive and represents a true picture of New York. To do that, they diversified their writing team and expanded the cast.

Bloys also emphasized that Samantha would not be killed off, but the series would show the natural downsizing of some friendships. This revival is less about the old days and more about what it’s like for the women in present times.

HBO Max is the show’s new home

Viewers are looking forward to checking the limited series out when it lands on HBO Max. There is no official word on love interests for any of the characters, but the network indicated Candace Bushnell’s book will still supply source material.

Some fans may know that the author wrote a follow-up to her original novel titled, Is There Still Sex in the City?. The story explores the women’s experiences with dating younger men, cosmetic surgery, and the Tinder app. Along with that, there are themes of children, love, divorce, and loss.

That doesn’t mean fans should give up hope on seeing Steve, Harry, Aidan, or some version of Big pop up on the small screen. Anything can happen.

There’s no l release date yet, but longtime SATC fans are optimistic that 10 episodes will be enough for this fresh installment. Stream all seasons of OG Sex and the City and both films on HBO Max.
