Stranger Things season 4 theories: Joyce to work for CIA in surprise career move
Ever since the Netflix series released a revealing trailer for the fourth season of Stranger Things, viewers have been running wild with outlandish predictions for the upcoming instalment. Will season four introduce a new career for Joyce Byers (played by Winona Ryder)?
Season three of the blockbuster nostalgia trip through 80s classics ended with a cataclysmic battle in Starcourt Mall, the shopping complex at the centre of Hawkins.
With the Mind Flayer’s defeat causing untold destruction, fan favourite character Jim Hopper (David Harbour) somehow survived his sacrifice to save his new family, and found himself imprisoned in a Russian labour camp.
Production for the upcoming fourth season has been put on hold, as have most major television series across the United States, due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
However, when the crisis disperses and the highly anticipated series finally returns, fans are expecting a major change to the previous status quo of Stranger Things’ previous three seasons.
- Stranger Things plot hole: Demogorgons still confusing fans
Some fans have taken to social media and online forums to discuss how they think the climactic and potentially final instalment of the epic series will go down.
While some have speculated in great depth how Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), Mike (Finn Wolfhard) and the rest of the gang could team up to rescue Hopper, some are questioning where Joyce Byers will fit into the next chapter.
One fan took to Reddit to propose an unusual theory which sees the mother of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) taking on an unlikely career change.
Taking a closer look at the season three finale, Redditor jimbo805 said: “After the battle of Starcourt the CIA is now amply aware of the dangers of the Upside Down and that the Russians are aware of this too.”
During the 1980s, the US was still in the midst of the tense Cold War with the Soviet Union, and the Russian threat played a major part in Stranger Things’ most recent season.
As Cold War pressures mount throughout the decade, the CIA’s role may also expand in the fourth season as the supernatural influence of the Upside Down begins to alter the events of history.
The fan continued: “Those in the CIA are smart enough to realize that Joyce knows all this too. She is a dangerous potential security leak. It makes sense that they will want to keep close tabs on Joyce.”
While this suggests Joyce could become the subject of clandestine scrutiny from the Central Intelligence Agency, it would be far more engaging to see the resourceful and protective mother take a more active role in America’s fight for freedom.

Finally, the fan highlighted some intriguing film locations that could hint towards an increased role for the CIA during the upcoming fourth season.
They added: “Part of season four will be filmed in the new Netflix studios in Albuquerque, New Mexico. New Mexico is the home of two National Labs.
“Somewhere on this huge government facility the CIA could find a job for Joyce.”
Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories are both top secret research facilities the CIA could be using during the fourth season to get ahead of Russian efforts to investigate the Upside Down.
- Stranger Things season 4 cancelled: Is Stranger Things cancelled?
As interdimensional threats draw ever closer, Joyce, who has extensive experience investigating and fighting the creatures, could be a valuable asset to the CIA.
Joyce, who previously worked in a grocery store in season three, may be looking for new employment as she takes on another guest in the Byers household, Eleven.
Whatever her role in the new season, fans should always expect the unexpected when it comes to Stranger Things.
Stranger Things seasons 1-3 are available to stream on Netflix.
