Strictlys Robert Webb says he was close to curtains before heart surgery
Comedian Robert Webb has spoken about how he nearly died as a result of his heart complications.
In 2019, the now-49 year old was diagnosed with a heart murmur, which went on to cause a mitral valve prolapse.
As a result, Robert, who’s married to fellow comedian Abigail Burdess, underwent open heart surgery – something which he says has changed his attitude towards life, and gave him the push he needed to do Strictly Come Dancing.
Speaking to Lorraine today, 7 October, Robert described himself as “very, very lucky”, and explained that following the surgery, he now has a normal life expectancy.
He said: “I had to work quite hard to get better, taking longer and longer walks, and eventually the walks became runs to get back in shape. But yeah, it took a year or so.”
“I was quite close to curtains, basically,” Robert continued. “So it gives you a different perspective on life, so when [Strictly Come Dancing] asked, I thought, ‘Oh Strictly, yeah, maybe in the future’.”
“Suddenly, saying you’ll do something tomorrow didn’t feel like a good answer to say, so let’s do it now.”
Before starring in the hit BBC show, which started on 18 September, Robert joked that he would “milk” the fact he had heart surgery.
He said: “Maybe, you know, I should be really milking it about having heart surgery. In fact, I'm gonna mention as often as possible."
The start of November will mark the Peep Show actor’s two year surgery anniversary and, with it being close to Halloween, he said that he might use it as an opportunity to “wear a costume where I get my scar covered in glitter”.
Joining Robert onthis year’s Strictly line-upis McFly band member Tom Fletcher, TV presenter AJ Odudu, Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty, and OK! columnist Judi Love.
Tom said at the time of the announcement: “I am so pleased the news is out, it was so hard keeping it a secret since Christmas.
“I am equal parts excited and terrified, I feel naked without a guitar, I'm so used to standing with a guitar on stage,” he added.
