Fans of AMC series The Walking Dead were left shocked by the news the comicbook drama would be coming to an end after over a decade. The American network confirmed The Walking Dead would be meeting its TV maker in season 11, which would be last hurrah before bowing out. The show first burst onto screens back in 2010 and served as an adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s graphic novels of the same name.
Season 11 will be the longest outing of the show with a bumper 24-episode final run – an extra eight episodes to the usual 16 instalments.
The new series is slated to start in 2021 and will wrap up in 2022, so fans still have much to look forward to before then.
Not only this but AMC have confirmed a Daryl Dixon (played by Norman Reedus) and Carol Peletier (Melissa McBride) spin-off series.
This new series is expected to be landing in 2023 once the main show has finished.
Head honcho of The Walking Dead, Scott Gimple said in a statement: “It’s been 10 years gone by; what lies ahead are two more to come and stories and stories to tell beyond that.
“What’s clear is that this show has been about the living, made by a passionate cast, team of writer/producers, producers, and crew, bringing to life the vision put forth by Robert Kirkman in his brilliant comic — and supported by the best fans in the world.
“This will be a grand finale that will lead to new premieres. Evolution is upon us. THE WALKING DEAD lives.”
While The Walking Dead’s showrunner Angela Kang said: “I look forward to digging in with our brilliant writers, producers, directors, cast and crew to bring this epic final chapter of Robert Kirkman’s story to life for our fans over the next two years.
“The Walking Dead flagship series has been my creative home for a decade and so it’s bittersweet to bring it to an end, but I could not be more excited to be working with Scott Gimple and AMC to develop a new series for Daryl and Carol.
“Working with Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride has been a highlight of my career and I’m thrilled that we get to keep telling stories together.”
Will Andrew Lincoln return as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead season 11?
WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from The Walking Dead comics and potentially from season 11
Over the years, the show built up a firm global fanbase with viewers waiting on tenterhooks to see where the survivors would go next.
From maniacal, eye-patched villains to cannibals at Terminus to the discovery of the Alexandria safe zone, it’s been quite a ride to say the least.
There have been many casualties along the way as is typical for a show set in the zombie apocalypse.
Throughout most of the show, viewers followed lead character and sheriff’s deputy Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) in his struggle to survive.

Rick disappeared midway through season nine as the show experienced a six-year time-jump.
AMC later confirmed a series of movies centred on Rick and his lone adventures, possibly some with his lover Michonne Hawthorne (Dania Gurira) possibly joining him.
With The Walking Dead now coming to end, there have been questions about the series finale and if Rick could be making a comeback.
Given Rick is a pretty major character, actor Lincoln could well be dusting off hat and boots to return to the show.
In the source material, Rick meets a brutal end after he’s killed by another character before he’s reanimated and it’s up to Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) to take him down again in his zombified form.
The AMC series has veered away from the source material, so it’s not clear whether Rick will meet a similar end or if the character would be kept alive.
Also, by killing off Rick in the show, it could impact on the timeline of the films which are in the works.
Gimple previously told Comicbook.com how eager Lincoln was to get back to the role of Rick in the movies after production was stalled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Lincoln is also likely to be excited to come back to The Walking Dead, which he essentially helped to launch 10 years ago.
The Walking Dead season 10 finale will be airing on October 4 on AMC and later on FOX UK
