Maxine Peake, 45, is from Bolton.
At the age of thirteen she joined the Octagon Youth Theatre at the age of thirteen before moving on to the Royal Exchange Youth Theatre.
She then completed a course in performing arts in Salford before getting a scholarship to attend RADA.
Her partner Pawlo Wintoniuk works in film and has directed Another Me (2013), Blood (2012) and Away (2016).
What did Maxine say in her article about George Floyd?
In an interview with the Independent, Peake said that “The tactics used by the police in America, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck, that was learnt from seminars with Israeli secret services.”
George Floyd was an African-American man, killed by US police after being arrested for using a forged $20 note.
The article says that a spokesperson for the Israeli police had denied this statement, saying “there is no tactic or protocol that calls to put pressure on the neck or airway”.
The article attracted attention after it was retweeted by the Shadow Education Secretary Rebecca Long-Bailey with the comment: “Maxine Peake is an absolute diamond”.
Long-Bailey was subsequently asked to step down from the shadow cabinet by Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer for retweeting the article, which contained an anti-Semitic conspiracy theory, the party has said.
In the article, Peake also describes Keir Starmer as “a more acceptable face of the Labour Party for a lot of people who are not really left wing”.

Maxine first came to prominence as the hapless but lovable Twinkle in Victoria Wood's sitcom Dinnerladies.
In 2006, she played Myra Hindley in the dark retelling of the real-life Moors Murders.
Another serious role she played was that of sexual health worker Sara Rowbotham in Three Girls – a drama about the Rochdale child sex abuse scandal.
Maxine has since appeared in long-running parts in various shows including Martha Costello in Silk, Miss Wade in Little Dorrit and Veronica in Shameless.
She also appeared in series four of dystopian Netflix series Black Mirror.
