Guard attacked with 'sharp tool' outside French Embassy in Saudi Arabia
A man has been arrested for attacking a guard outside the French embassy in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The attacker was said to be carrying a ‘sharp tool’ during the incident, Saudi state TV reports. He has now been arrested. The guard has been taken to hospital and his condition is not believed to be life-threatening.
It comes just hours after two suspected terrorist attacks have rocked France today. In Nice, three people were killed by a knifeman at the Notre-Dame Basilica around 10am (local time) this morning.
Two people, a man and a woman, were decapitated during the stabbings. Two of the victims were killed inside the church, while the third died from their injuries after making an escape.
The attacker was arrested and has been taken to hospital after he was shot by police. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi told reporters that the ‘Islamo-fascist’ had repeatedly shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ even after being detained by police.
Hours later, in Avignon, a knifeman was shot dead by French police for threatening people with a blade and shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’, local media reported.
The attacks are the second and third terrorist incidents in France in less than two weeks. On October 16, school teacher Samuel Paty was decapitated in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, a suburb of Paris, for showing his class cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.
The knifeman, later identified as Abdullakh Anzorov, 18, was then shot dead by police.
French President Emmanuel Macron denounced the attack, telling reporters the next day: ‘One of our fellow citizens was assassinated today because he was teaching, he was teaching pupils about freedom of expression, the freedom to believe or not believe. Our compatriot was cowardly attacked, was the victim of an Islamist terrorist attack.’
Macron declared that France would not ‘renounce the caricatures’ of Prophet Muhammad, and the cartoons from French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo were projected onto government buildings last week.
The move sparked anger across the Islamic world, with thousands of Muslims calling for a boycott of French products.
