An Instagram-famous cat died after being injured by a boy who tripped over his leash in a Brooklyn park — resulting in a wild brawl and one arrest, police and the feline’s grieving owners said.
Ponzu, a gray tabby with more than 33,000 followers, had been walking with his owners when they encountered the child in McCarren Park near Greenpoint, cops said.
The boy accidentally tripped the feline’s leash and injured him, police said.
Chanan Aksornnan, who is the feline’s owner, said a group with the child “did not offer any apology nor remorse,” but instead began to argue with them.
“They immediately began a verbal abuse which escalated into a physical assault. I got punched and kicked by three women,” she told Greenpointers, adding that their dog and bird, who usually accompany for daytime strolls, were also attacked by the group.
Police said Aksornnan was allegedly kicked and punched by Evelyn Serrano, 42, of Greenpoint, resulting in cuts and bruises.
When Aksornnan’s boyfriend tried to intervene, he was punched in the face, leaving him with a gash on his nose, police said.
Serrano fled the scene, but has since been arrested in connection to the April 4 assault, police said.
It’s unclear what the relationship is between Serrano and the boy who had the run-in with the cat.
In an Instagram post, Aksornnan confirmed that her beloved cat later died after “suffering shock and injuries.”
“We are traumatized, lost for words, heartbroken,” Chanan wrote of the death of the 3-year-old feline, who had a previous heart condition.
“We feel robbed. Ponzu was taken away from us way too soon,” she continued.
