Joe Biden wishes Trumps a ‘swift recovery’ after COVID-19 diagnoses

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Friday wished President Trump and first lady Melania Trump well after their diagnoses with COVID-19.

“Jill and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family,” Biden tweeted.

Trump, 74, issued an after-midnight tweet announcing that he and the first lady were positive for the serious respiratory bug, which infected 7.2 million Americans and killed 207,000 since March.

The president tweeted: “Tonight, @FLOTUS and I tested positive for COVID-19. We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!”

On Thursday, his close aide Hope Hicks tested positive for COVID-19. She accompanied Trump on trips aboard Air Force One on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Trump and Biden clashed throughout an acrimonious first presidential debate Tuesday in Cleveland, Ohio, and Trump’s illness plunges the remainder of the campaign into doubt ahead of the Nov. 3 Election Day.

Trump rarely wears a coronavirus face mask in public to project strength amid the ongoing economic recovery from the pandemic, and has mocked Biden’s diligent mask use.

Trump is a lifelong abstainer from tobacco and alcohol and his former White House physician, Dr. Ronny Johnson, famously told reporters in 2018 that “if he had a healthier diet over the last 20 years he might live to be 200 years old.”
