Mexican researchers say their nose-only mask actually works
You can eat and drink while wearing this mask – and still be protected from Covid: Mexican researchers say their nose-only mask actually works
- In a video shared Wednesday, a man and a woman are seen wearing the masks
- The ‘Eating Mask’ is designed to be worn under a regular protective face mask
- Unlike a face mask, it frees a person’s mouth to allow them to eat and drink
- But it keeps their nose covered potentially reducing the risk of virus transmission
- People were quick to note the goofy appearance of the mask, while others noted that a year ago – before the pandemic – face masks were considered strange too
Researchers in Mexico have invented a new nose-only Covid-19 mask designed to keep a person’s schnoz covered while eating and drinking, according to a report.
The nose masks – worn underneath standard face masks that have become common-place during the pandemic – were unveiled during a video demonstration by an unnamed man and a woman sitting down for lunch.
In the video, shared by Reuters news agency on Wednesday, the pair are shown taking off their face masks revealing the unusual nose-only masks underneath, before eating a drinking while sitting at an outdoor table.
Plastic packets containing the masks are then shown on the table. The mask has been called the ‘Eating Mask’, according to a label on the packs.
Coronavirus is a respiratory disease that spreads through the air by droplets and smaller particles exhaled from the nose and mouth of an infected person as they breathe, speak or cough.

According to Johns Hopkins University, human cells that give people a sense of smell are also key entry point for the coronavirus, meaning it is important to keep noses covered when coming into close contact with other people.
The nose-only face masks offer a layer of protection over a person’s nose, while leaving their mouth uncovered to be able to eat and drink, while potentially reducing the risk of spreading or contracting the virus.
But people were quick to mock the goofy look of the new masks.
‘Hardly a new invention, clowns have been wearing them for years,’ one user posted on Twitter along with a picture of a clown with a bright red nose.
Another wrote: ‘Unfortunately – it dramatically Increases the risk of collapsing into hysterical laughter and choking to death on your food.’
‘Is there an option to get a nose cover with silly glasses attached,’ another asked.

Some defended the invention, however, pointing out that before the pandemic, masks were considered unusual too.
‘Well, just a nose mask would REDUCE transmission of germs and viruses. It looks odd because we’re not used to it. A year ago facemasks look odd,’ one wrote.
‘I know this is dumb but to be fair the nose contains the highest concentration of the receptors that Covid attaches itself to, so this is definitely better than being mask off while eating,’ said another Twitter user.
People reacted with bemusement to the video, while other appreciated the potential it had to reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission
The World Health Organisation recommends that people wear masks covering their nose, mouth and chin for best protection against the virus.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention studies, meanwhile, show that it is generally safer to wear masks with more material, with a separate CDC study showing that double-masking can significantly decrease the spread of Covid-19.
Roughly 30 million people have contracted the virus in the US, and 544,000 people have died from it, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University.
Despite the devastation caused by the coronavirus, masks have remained a contentious issue for many who continue to refuse to wear them.
The resistance to mask wearing has not been helped by the politicization of the issue by former US president Trump and others, leading to large parts of the country becoming stubbornly against the practice.
One of President Joe Biden’s first actions when he assumed office in January was to issue a mask order, requiring people to wear face coverings on planes, airports and on all federal property.
