The players, all from the same team, insisted they were from one household.

But the bar worker called the police to report a breach of the coronavirus regulations.

Officers arrived at the pub shortly after and issued the group with fines.

Tyneside and the North East are currently in Tier 2 lockdown, with households banned from meeting indoors.

It comes as the UK's coronavirus death toll rose by 241 yesterday to 43,967, the largest daily increase since June 4.

There were more than 21,000 new cases, bringing the overall number infected to 762,542.

Speaking after the footballers were fined, Chief Superintendent Janice Hutton, of Northumbria Police, said: "This group showed a flagrant disregard for the rules which are in place to help prevent the spread of coronavirus.

"Actions like this undermine the efforts being made by the majority of others in order to protect themselves, their family, friends and wider communities.

"We will continue to work closely with our communities and offer advice to people who have mistakenly broken the restrictions.

"However, as we have made clear, where individuals are choosing to ignore the measures in place, we are committed to taking enforcement action to protect our communities."

The force declined to name the team or the pub.
