UK weather – Britain to be lashed by torrential rain today as April sunshine comes to end and temperature drops to 8C – The Sun

WET weather is due to lash the UK after the weeks of glorious sunshine and in lockdown Britain.

Temperatures are expected to plunge to 8C this morning – ahead of a nippy and damp mid-week.

April showers are to blow back in, with warnings that the mercury will plunge by more than 10C in some areas.

A weather cell blowing in from the Atlantic will cause "power showers" – and the rain will go on into May.

Worst-hit areas are likely to be the Midlands and Wales, where residents can expect up to 30mm of rain in just 24 hours.

'FROM AWESOME TO AWFUL'

April has been one of the warmest on record – and at the weekend, it was hotter in the UK than Malaga.

But after wall-to-wall blue skies, we're returning to more traditional seasonal weather, with 50 mile per hour gales predicted for Thursday.

Forecaster Marco Petagna said we'll all need to brace for chilly days – particularly those in the south.

"In central and southern England, tomorrow will be a cloudy, wet day, with showers getting quite heavy at times," he said.

'IT'LL BE COLDEST IN THE SOUTH'

"It'll be pretty chilly too.

"Some areas will struggle to get above 8C.

"These areas will have been more than 10C higher in the past few days, so it's a big change."

People living in the north-east and Scotland will initially see drier, brighter weather before it turns wetter and colder.

Over the next few days, we'll see some five inches of rain – the average for April is just under two-and-a-half inches.

Brian Gaze, of The Weather Outlook, said: "April is going from awesome to awful, with a wet end to the month and start to May."

But Mr Petagna said there could be good news yet.

"It'll possibly be drier on Friday," he said.

"Into the weekend, temperatures could pick up to the high teens again."
